The EU Research Paper

The EU Research Paper

In 1957 a few European heads of state and government met in Rome to discuss a small common market. They have been brought together by their predecessors failures, especially the two world wars. Their goals were not to dissolve the nation-states they represent, but to save them from themselves and from each other, while at the same time strengthening their political, economic and cultural ties (Serfaty 1). The European Union as its name states is the effort to unify Europe. Not just politically or economically, but socially and culturally as well. Political and economic unification is now fully underway with signs of positive integration. The problem, however, lies with social and cultural integration. This is not as easy to come by because it involves the emotions and beliefs of the now 350 million individuals who are apart of the EU. With plans for future enlargement the European Union must take into account many factors. The interrelated variables that are most likely to shape the EU in the future include the economic market and the speed of its growth, the quality of public leadership and public support as well as the effectiveness of Europe's institutions in addressing their member's common agendas for stability within Europe (Serfaty 2).
__________________________________________________________

__________________________________________________________

The European Union saw its birth with the creation of the European Coal and Steel Community which Robert Schuman referred to as a "process of political as well as economic unification "(Pinder 3). One of the EU's purposes was to bring together the countries of Europe for economic and political advancement. The six founding states, France, Germany, Belgium, Luxembourg, Netherlands and Italy came together in hopes of preventing further warfare as well as to unify and strengthen themselves against the political and economic growth of the United States (Peterson and Shackleton 2). The process to unify Europe has been long and tiresome, but not without much progress. The EU started out as a few countries coming together and planning for a future as one, and has evolved into a collection of member states with a common Parliament, Commission and Council as well as central bank, single currency and common flag.

Economic growth and success is important to the EU and its continued enlargement.

Economic growth in terms of a single market is essential in the continued growth of the European Union. The removal of trade barriers allowed for a single market to emerge in 1987 which focused on the free movement of people, goods, services and capital across Europe (Sutcliffe 03/13/03). By introducing the Single European Act, the EU was faced with urdles such as standards, qualifications and taxes, etc., and there are no signs of these hurdles disappearing (Sutcliffe 03/13/03).

Today, the economic cycle is the continued focus of Europe's future. The current 15 member states share a common currency as well as a central bank. This means that the member states are no longer attempting to unify but have already succeeded in economic unification. The emergence of the EURO in 1999 "was an unprecedented act of collective will". "Inflation was conquered, budget deficits reduced, and long-term interest rate differentials narrowed" (Serfaty In order for the euro to withstand political difficulty, national currencies must be formally withdrawn and extended to all EU states (Serfaty 3). Presently there are only 13 of the 15 states that have adopted the euro and in order for this economic cycle to continue common economic policies must be enforced.

Microcomputer Specialists Term Paper

Microcomputer Specialists Term Paper

I have used computers for quite awhile although I am still a beginner. I am able to use Microsoft Word and Excel and I am able to surf the Internet and perform searches efficiently. I am very interested in expanding my knowledge on all aspects of Computer Technology. I plan with my education to become a Network Administrator and a Computer Technician. The starting wage for Computer Support Specialists is around $1700 a month.
__________________________________________________________

__________________________________________________________

Computer Support specialists are and will be one of the most important jobs in the near future. As technology changes specialists are needed to assist average people understand what they are doing on their computers. A Computer Support specialist is a person who can give support to people who have little or no experience with computers. They are responsible for maintaining the up keeping of computers. Specialists use programs like Microsoft Office 2000 to complete professional documents and set up Local Area Networks.

A computer specialist performs preventative maintenance for hardware, software and networks. This means that they clean and vacuum cables. They perform inspections to ensure there are no viruses on software or the network. In a day of work they typically evaluate and select software and hardware. The specialists are needed because a large number of businesses know their line of work but know very little about computers. The large computer words simply mean that they choose the appropriate programs that a business will need to function correctly. They install the software and fix the potential and current problems.

In the business world a specialist can use word processors, spreadsheets, databases, graphics, accounting and communication packages. This is useful to anyone but with a specialist other computer knowledge they are able to do almost anything in any office. Any large business would need a few specialists in their office. They can teach technical training for less advanced users.

Large amounts of people think that a specialist is the same profession as a programmer. This is completely not true. A programmer writes, tests and maintains the instructions called programs or software. A specialist gives the support needed for the programs or software. So there is a large difference. The computer world needs both of these important professions for anything to technically work properly.

Through the information I have read I know this is the right career for me.

Porfirio Diaz Research Paper

Porfirio Diaz Research Paper

It is better to regret something that has been done rather than never been done. Porifirio Diaz was a great and experienced leader. He presided over thirty years containing many great advances in Mexico. So why after all the support and reelection during that time do historians today look back and have any question of his motive in the stability and growth of his nation.

Not only is Diaz remembered today but well liked in his time of dictatorship. Diaz was a well rounded leader. He had knowledge of many important aspects in leadership such as areas of priesthood or religion, law and of course military. He was born in Mexico in the state of Oaxaca and born of the combined ancestry of Spanish and Mixtec. Being that he was part Mixtec, he had more of a desire to rule Mexico positively because it was the homeland of his many ancestors. This concept plays a key role in any leader, when the soil that is fought for is their homeland. Diaz was disciplined and a hard worker. He moved from average military soldier to Captain then to Colonel and eventually to General. It is said that great Generals make good presidents which Diaz demonstrates.
__________________________________________________________

__________________________________________________________

As president of the nation Diaz strived to establish economic growth and the countries stability. He created many jobs during his era, churches, government buildings and monuments were constructed that created jobs for many people. In the beginning of the Diaz era, Mexico was bankrupt. Although by the year 1895, a surplus of $2 million was increased by 1910 to $62 million. At that very same time, the value of imports and exports increased to 500 million pesos. For the first time the country seemed economically stable.

Modernization really took place in the Diaz era. The construction of the extensive railroad network was accomplished and made a major improvement in transportation. Mining for copper and digging for petroleum was a big factor pertaining to the economic growth in Mexico. The land contained valuable exports that the nation could use as an advantage over other countries.

For the first time, the people were able to conform to the nation as their own instead of following the culture set up originally by the Spanish. Many customs and traditions come from this era which flourished the culture that we are so interested in today.

It is hard to be a leader of an undeveloped or fallen nation. Every move made can affect the outcome of growth or morale of the people. Porifirio Diaz did a wonderful job in trying to do what was best for Mexico. He did sell a large part of Mexico's land to the United States which many look at negatively. That move was not only wise at the time, but a good outcome now. Considering the economic problems that the country is dealing with now, that extra large amount of land could have caused more of a problem.

Diaz took his knowledge and power, and with that, tried to create a stable nation. It could not have been easy being a leader of a nation striving for independence.

Shoeless Joe Research Paper

Shoeless Joe Jackson Research Paper

In 1919 the Major League Baseball World Series was played between the Chicago White Sox and the Cincinnati Reds. The White Sox were 5:1 favorites over Cincinnati, the story of the World Series would be forever be known as the darkest day in the history of baseball. The series would forever be known as the Black Sox Scandal of 1919. The White Sox lost the series five games to three. Rumors circulated that the series had been thrown. White Sox players had been given money in return for sub-par performances. Eight men were implicated as conspirators in the fix. Among the conspirators implicated in the scandal was a man by the name of "Shoeless Joe" Jackson. Jackson was a future hall of fame. His performance in the 1919 series was superb; however, he was one of the eight players of the White Sox to be banned for life from professional baseball. The lifetime banishment ended the careers of the eight men, and Jackson could never be allowed as a member of the hall of fame. This has led to many debates as to whether or not Jackson was among the seven other men who threw the World Series.
__________________________________________________________

__________________________________________________________

There are two different accounts of the Black Sox Scandal. One account of the scandal labels Jackson as being innocent. The other side of the story says that Jackson was guilty and got what he deserved. Although Jackson contributed the most towards his team season success, under closer inspection, the true facts of the Black Sox scandal of 1919 shows Jackson did conspire in fixing the World Series.

Jackson was an illiterate farm boy from South Carolina, whose lifetime batting average of .356 and outstanding running and fielding abilities would have eventually put him in the Hall of Fame, if it had not been for his lifetime banishment. He had a rifle of an arm. His glove was said to be "the resting place for many would-be doubles"(Baseball page). His swing was even copied by Babe Ruth. Jackson was a competitor who played the game the way it was supposed to be played. He played for the love of the game. He played to win.

In the World Series of 1919, Jackson allegedly threw the series. However in the series "he led the White Sox with a .375 batting average, had 13 hits, threw out five baserunners, fielded 1000%, and, handled thirty chances in the outfield with no errors"(Nixon). His performance shows Jackson did better than any player on either team. Jackson played to his full potential in the 1919 World Series. In the game of baseball "Statistics do not lie. Joe Jackson did nothing to throw any game in the 1919 World Series, he played his heart out in the game he loved"(Nixon). Even one of the official scorers, Christy Mathewson, could see nothing dishonest with Jackson's playing during the series.

Even before the Series began there were rumors swirling around a fix of the Series was on. When Cincinnati took the best of nine series - 5 games to 3, it did not sit well with a lot of baseball fans. The fix became public "One year later after the series was held a Chicago Grand Jury blew the whole thing wide open naming eight players as having conspired with gamblers to throw the series"(Mr. Baseball). The White Sox players were paid very poorly because their owner, Charles Comiskey, was one of the stingiest owners in baseball. This led to an easy persuasion by the gamblers. "The men were easy pickings for the gamblers who offered the eight teammates $100,000 (but actually only paid $10,000) to loose the series"(Mr. Baseball). The eight men, including Jackson were found innocent in court. However, being proven innocent in a trial court was not enough for newly appointed baseball Commissioner, Kenesaw Landis. He chose to ignore the courts ruling; giving the eight men the death sentence in baseball. This was because "In his zeal to clean up Baseball, Landis handed down the stiffest penalty he could "lifetime banishment"(Nixon). A court had ruled the men innocent so they should not have been given lifetime banishment in baseball. Many felt a year or two penalties at most but not a career ending punishment.

Jackson knew there was a fix going on before the series was started. It does not make him guilty in throwing the series. Jackson went to Charles Comiskey before the series started and pleaded with Comiskey about sitting him for the series because "something was wrong"(Jackson) with the games to be played. Jackson did not want to be involved in a crooked series. Although "Comiskey knew that the series was fixed, he could not afford to lose many thousands of dollars if the series was called off"(Nixon). Jackson even told Kid Gleason, the White Sox manager, that he did not want to play. Gleason ordered him to play, and Jackson was forced to play in a "dishonorable" World Series.

Even after the series was over and the trial started Jackson kept the stance, that he was innocent. When the trial started the men had to give statements on what their part in the series was. Charles Comiskey hired his personal lawyer, Alfred Austrian, to be Jackson's as well as the other seven White Sox players implicated in the scandal's lawyer. When Jackson met with Austrian he told him he was innocent. In an effort to protect Charles Comiskey, "Austrian told Jackson what to say on the witness stand, or, go to jail"(Nixon). Jackson had no other option but to sign a confession linking him to the scandal. Jackson believed if he signed the confessions then he would be able to return to baseball, the game he loved.

For the other side of the story, a closer look must be viewed at the statistics and the entire story more clearly. It is true that Jackson put up incredible numbers and performed well in the series, but is that entirely true; it might not be. Jackson always insisted he played to win, but his .375 batting average in the Series contains an interesting split. "In the four thrown games, Jackson hit .250 with one run scored and no RBI; in the other four, he batted .500 with four runs and six RBI"(Pappas). In each of the first two games Jackson allowed a two-out, two-run triple to left field. That last piece of evidence stands out the most. Jackson was always known for his defense in the outfield. It was said, "his glove was the resting place for many a would-be double" (Holmes). It is odd that a "Gold Glove" left fielder would allow triples in back to back games. This would not of happen if Joe had not wanted it to happen. He was not the type of player to have four bad games during the four thrown games. This was not a coincidence.

Jackson signed a confession and testified before a grand jury investigating the incident he did, in fact, accept money to help throw the series in favor of Cincinnati. People have tried to say it was Comiskey's lawyer who had him sign a confession, which he could not read. That is believable, but the fact that Jackson lied under oath he helped in fixing the Series, is not.

A teammate of Jackson's, Ed Cicotte, even pinned Jackson as one of the conspirators. His confession broke the scandal wide open. He identified Jackson as one of his co-conspirators. Years later so did Chick Gandil, the ringleader behind the fix. These two men linked Jackson to the fix. Jackson also was given $5,000 for throwing the series. He admitted to keeping the money, which he knew was from the gamblers who bribed the Sox to throw the Series.

Even though Jackson was acquitted in a federal court on all charges, it has no bearing on the decision to ban the eight men from baseball. Jackson and the other men were not charged with throwing the World Series, because it is not a crime. He and the other Black Sox were charged with throwing games with the intent to defraud the public. The jury was instructed by law: "The State must prove that it was the intent of the ballplayers and gamblers charged with conspiracy through the throwing of the World Series, to defraud the public and others, and not merely to throw games" (Pappas). Since there was no evidence the Black Sox were motivated by anything but the desire to line their own pockets, Jackson would have been acquitted even if he had admitted throwing the Series. Thus the court decision had nothing to do with the decision of Landis to ban the players.

These two accounts of the scandal differ in whose to blame. A baseball historian might take the side of Jackson being to blame for the scandal. They would feel Jackson got what he deserved. Then there is the average baseball enthusiast who has seen movies about the scandal and they believe Jackson is innocent. Those fans believe that it was someone other than Jackson's fault. He was led to believe things were different and he played incredible in the 1919 series.

The facts show that Jackson did in fact conspire with seven other men to throw the World Series. He did in fact play well in the World Series. However he played well in the games that the White Sox won. In the four thrown games he played entirely different. Those four games were uncommon for the future hall of fame. That is why Jackson did in fact throw the series. The myth of him not throwing the series and all of the other factors is just that, a myth. When the myth is stripped away, Shoeless Joe Jackson stands exposed as a willing participant in baseball's greatest crime.

Money in Sport Research Paper

Money in Sport Research Essay

In today's society we are dominated by the world of sport. No matter which country you live in, you are constantly receiving images of various codes of sport. We all have a favorite team, no matter what type of sport and most have a Hero that takes part in the game. These constant images of the players, officials as well as administrators of the game allow us, the viewers, to hold them directly accountable for their actions.

We see everyday the problems that some sports have and we, the viewers of that sport, are able to express our opinions on those issues. The one big problem however, is that we are there to enjoy the game and the players are as well, but, when monetary gain begins to take priority, the players lose all that fun and begin to focus in on the money. That, is where sport is let down in many ways. We see it in every code of sport. The players, officials and administrators sometimes are caught up in a world of deception, lies and trickery, for what though? Just to earn the extra buck!
__________________________________________________________

__________________________________________________________

Today's sport is caught up in the money race. Profit, revenue and cash all seem to be top of everyone's list. What happened to the days when a player would play off his own back and only played the sport because of how he or she enjoyed the game so much. Well, to be honest with one another, we will never see those games or those fantastic players ever again. Now all we see are lawsuits, huge profits and the downside, bribery and match fixing. These last two versions of events are the 2 main arguments that are absolutely destroying the world of sport, as we know it. There are many major principles throughout the world we can focus in on now. Afterwards, you will se the full devastating affect that money in sport can have on the game as well as the people involved.

Speaking with the times I will now discuss how the influence of money in Soccer has ruined the game. Today Europe and South America dominate Soccer respectively. Both Regions producing some of the worlds greatest teams and nations. This however also proves another of my major points that these regions are also some of the wealthiest teams in the world and the respective leagues are the most popular as well. This has down falls as well. The idea of selling players to other clubs to regain profit on the players has allowed for clubs to not really have the personal ideals in mind when making key transfer decisions from club to club. For instance one club could buy a player for a reasonable price and the player plays for this club for 3 years allowing his value to almost triple due to his skill levels. Another club then bids for him at that price specified. The club doesn't care about how the player will benefit the team in the future but rather how he will influence their back pocket. We cant have several clubs worrying more about their clubs financial statements than the actual players who allow for this statement to take place anyway.

The other problem is that these players that have dominated the league or club they are involved in become dependent on the money they receive. Due to this they become almost addicted to it and their whole attitude towards the game seems to change totally, the game doesn't seem to matter as much. There work ethic drops as was shown in the World Cup that is currently on now, all the top players in the world come out and perform for their countries. My last point has come out in this because out of the top 7 teams a remarkable 4 have dropped out before even getting into the final 16. This pathetic show is only being put down by many soccer experts as these teams complete dependence on money as showing their ranking in sport. Of course they have the players to play at this top level but their heart for the game has gone. This shows how other nations have shone in the World Cup because their countries are not financially as great, and the players are still playing for the fun of it. A perfect example is Senegal as well as USA they aren't dominant Soccer nations but they have the will to play and don't care about the money because it is not there.

The Constant show of bad images in sport do ultimately come back to the inclusion of money in some way or another. Whilst there are many very historic games that have not changed over the years in many ways, they have still had problems with money. The historic game of cricket has been completely ripped apart over the last couple of years. The players receive huge pay- outs for their skills but greed and the hunger for money has pushed some players over the edge. The bribery in the game of cricket over the last few years has become ridiculous. The amount of players banned from the game has never been as high as it is now, due to the fact that the game has been completely investigated to worm out any signs of match fixing, bribery or cheating. The problems range from tampering with equipment to win matches, bribing officials and players to "throw matches" as well as being payed to disclose censored material. Most teams today have been rocked by these allegations, and we can clearly relate it back to money.

Another sport that in my view has been ruined by money mainly takes place in USA, such as the game of Baseball. These problems take on another view. It isn't that the money is affecting anyone personally it is affecting the teams and the institutions that take part in the game. My proposal is that corporate dealings and sponsorships is allowing the idea of focusing in on a team and the whole idea of sport, just to sell a product and get a message across. This doesn't just happen with advertising around the grounds, it also takes place in the actual teams. Many companies buy teams just to promote their product. In Baseball the sponsors have more control than the actual owners of the teams.

This whole idea of sponsorships is allowing major teams that have the traditions and the history, such as Essendon and Carlton in the AFL in Australia to become nothing more than small billboards running around on a ground. The whole idea of a player is restricted to what they have on the uniform as well as what they do, what they wear, what they eat and where they go. To be honest this isn't the entire life that may be beneficial apart from the financial aspect that would be good for you. Again this all comes back to the idea of the mass influx of money into the sport over the last 20 years and again we must ask where will sport be in 20 years?

The idea of the increase of money in sport has not been beneficial to the games, codes and leagues we know. Money allows for many things to take place that are totally unethical both socially and morally. Such as the ideas of cheating, bribery and match fixing. Is it all ok for this to keep on going? The answer is clearly no!! We cant let many of our favorite past- times just simply fade away after law suits and anti corruption commissions take place and ruin the games.

We all love sport and sport is loved by millions, lets not let the million$ ruin our game!!!

Term Paper on War in Iraq

Research Paper on War in Iraq

One of the major issues being discussed is weather or not troops should remain in Iraq. The US has already started to rebuild Iraq, we can not just decide to quit. If we just gave up, that would be throwing away all the time and effort we had recently put into developing the country. The troops should remain in Iraq until the job is finished. We were the ones to make the mess, now we have to proceed in cleaning it up. Successfully turning Iraq into a democracy would assist us in gaining back respect from other countries as well as Iraqis.
__________________________________________________________

__________________________________________________________

Our goal is to turn Iraq into a democracy. To do so we must finish what we have started. This was not said to be an easy task, but it is one we are committed to, and must remain committed to, until it is done (globalsecurity.com). If we were to leave Iraq, another dictator similar to Sudan Hussein may come to power, which would put the Iraqi people right back were they started before the US became involved (cnn.com). By rebuilding Iraq, we could become potential allies, trading partners, or it could serve as a strategic location in the Middle East (newshour.com).

Although there have not been any weapons of mass destruction found yet, that is one more reason we should stay. If Iraq were to acquire WMDs it could threaten regional stability and deter any potential military action against them (cnn.com). Concerns of the high cost of remaining in Iraq have been brought up as well. It will cost even more money if we leave now and have to come back and finish it in the future. Loss of lives may be another reason to send troops home, but even more will be at stake if we are to decamp. The lives of the Iraqis will be in jeopardy if another extremist comes to power.

It would be a greater benefit if US troops were to remain in Iraq until the rebuilding process is finished. We do not want to throw away the time and effort that was put into Iraq. If the US is to successfully turn Iraq into a democracy we would gain respect from other countries along with respect from Iraqis. Iraq could benefit us by becoming allies, trading partners or give us strategic location in the Middle East. More lives and money would be saved in the process as well. It would be in best interest for both the US and Iraq.

Diversity Term Paper

Diversity Research Paper

Diversity is present in many facets of life. Diversity also comes in many forms. It can be in the form of racism, sexism, ageism, and many other forms. My feelings generally are feelings that go against any sort of diversity. I know that discrimination is present in today's society despite the efforts against it. I sometimes, however, tend to believe that others blow the amount of discrimination that is present out of proportion. Another belief of mine is that some who attempt to do good by raising awareness of discrimination and diversity go about their tasks in an inappropriate manner.
__________________________________________________________

__________________________________________________________

First and foremost, I believe that everyone on this earth is equal to me. Some may be smarter, more athletic, or different in any other manner, but the life of that other person is worth no more than mine. The same goes for those who are not as smart as I am, or who do not possess all the same qualities. I am no better than they are. I firmly believe that anyone who believes that they are better than another is ignorant to the different qualities and individuality of those other people. Diversity is something that is necessary. If all were the same, then life would be boring, miserable, and meaningless.

Although discrimination is present, and in the forms of racism, sexism, and many other forms is inherently wrong, I believe that on occasion it is blown out of proportion. Some statistics were read concerning the differences in employment and salaries between men and women. I believe that many factors can account for these differences that are not involved with negative discrimination. The fact that less women with similar degrees are employed in America's work force can be due to a number of reasons. One such situation that can account for these differences is motherhood. It is difficult to maintain a job and raise a young child at the same time. It is also proven that it is better for a child's development if the mother stays home with the child to nurse and take care of it, rather than send the child to day care. As for the differences in wages, this difference may be a result of the length of time a position is held, or it could be due to the hours worked. These details were not given in the statistics. Some may be working part time, and some may also have held a position for a longer period of time, which could account for the differences in wages. I do not know whether all of these possibilities were researched when the statistics were developed, but all scenarios should be considered when analyzing certain statistics, such as those involving employment between male and females.

Awareness of diversity and discrimination is necessary. Some people, I believe go about promoting awareness the wrong ways, however. The way the woman in the video approached awareness was not the right way. I do not, however, know what the right way to approach this subject is, but fighting fire with fire, as the video calls it, is not the right way. Others ways must be found.

In conclusion, awareness of diversity and discrimination must be raised; proper research must be done in order to accurately analyze statistics; and people must realize that we are all equal.

Term Paper on of Mice and Men

Of Mice and Men Essay

Two men work on a ranch in an attempt to fulfill their dreams. In Of Mice and Men, by John Steinbeck, these men are not able to accomplish their goal because of a heartbreaking tragedy. George, who is small and smart, travels everywhere with Lennie, who is huge and has the mind of a child. They continuously struggle to earn a stake for their work, but Lennie keeps on getting them into trouble. George deserves the most sympathy, because he has to shoot Lennie, he won't have Lennie's company anymore, and his dream of owning a farm is now gone.
__________________________________________________________

__________________________________________________________

George has to live with the fact that he shoots and kills his best friend, Lennie. This is a very difficult thing for him to do because he has feelings for Lennie. He is forced to make an extremely difficult decision; whether to leave Lennie alone and risk the men finding him and killing him, or shoot him in the back of the head and ensure a short death without much pain. Curley states, "I'm gonna shoot the guts outa that big bastard myself, even if I only got one hand" (98). George has to decide what he thinks is best for Lennie, which might mean death. He reluctantly shoots Lennie in the back of the head despite his affection for him and their friendship. George has to live with the guilt that he is responsible for Lennie's death.

George will have to travel around the country without Lennie at his side. Lennie always travels everywhere with him, and they have a great bond of friendship because of this. George states, "When his Aunt Clara died, Lennie just come along with me out working" (40). Despite Lennie's annoyance and his habit of unintentionally causing trouble, George enjoys his company and believes he would be extremely lonely without him. George says, "I seen the guys that go around on the ranches alone. That ain't no good. They don't have no fun" (41). Without his companionship with Lennie, he will not have anyone to talk to or share his feelings with while traveling. Also, because of their excellent friendship, George will feel deep sorrow and sadness. I will indeed be very difficult for George to forget about Lennie and move on with his life.

Dreaming about the possible future farm brings peace and happy thoughts to George and Lennie. Both of them are looking forward to owning the farm and escaping the dirty, dusty ranches and leaving behind cruel people like Curley. Also, it is a relaxing place and George will not have to do nearly as much work. George says, "It ain't enough land so we'd have to work too hard. Maybe six, seven hours a day" (58). The plan nearly comes true, but not quite.

In conclusion, the loss of Lennie affects George in many ways and he deserves the most sympathy. George and Lennie are true friends who share everything with each other and care for each other. George will have a difficult time accepting the fact that he's responsible for Lennie's death, their great partnership is now destroyed, and George is now not capable to own his own property, which is his lifelong dream. Because of the death of Lennie, George's life has completely changed.

Term Paper on Huckleberry Finn

Research Paper on Huckleberry Finn

"Banned!" a common reaction to Mark Twain's controversial novel Huckleberry Finn. What is it about this novel of the realism era that provides so much racial tension? Why is this novel known as both "America's greatest novel" and "America's most racist novel?"

Twain was a man of the North; he was against slavery and supported civil rights. As previously addressed, Twain was an author in the realism era, thus he was a realist. Speaking of the word "real," that's a word that I have narrowed down to describe Huckleberry Finn Finn; it's real in every aspect of the word. The language used in the novel is a reflection of the time period.
__________________________________________________________

__________________________________________________________

The language is the biggest controversy concerning the novel. The word "nigger," is used over 200 times in the novel! Some argue the racism in the concept, but I say it's "real" language. The words "African-American" and/or "colored" were not yet "invented" during these times. If you were black, you were most likely a slave and labeled as a "nigger." So, for those who argue Twain's vernacular, I ask, "Would you rather a fake, sugar-coated aspect of the times? Are you afraid or resentful of the truth?" I say, the truth is present and must be addressed, otherwise there will be NO change; we must educate our youth.

Jim, is a runaway slave in the novel; there is much controversy in the character Jim. It is argued that Twain depicts Jim as a stupid, inhuman creature. Is this another form of racism? I think not! Granted, in the novel Jim is an ignorant, uneducated man, but so were most slaves. And yes, Twain does use Jim as a form of comic relief, but not in a racial aspect, because he also makes light of Huckleberry's ignorance as a child. Moreover, Twain uses the King and the Duke as comic relief and they are white thieves.

Next, Jim is human. Twain expresses this in the section were Jim tells Huckleberry of his deaf daughter. Also, throughout the novel, Jim's humanity is apparent because of his devotion and loyalty to Huckleberry. Jim could have easily had his freedom if he had abandoned Huckleberry, but his human instincts and heart keep him with Huckleberry because he realizes that Huckleberry is merely a helpless child. Jim serves as a father figure for Huckleberry, guiding him and protecting him.

In conclusion, Twain isn't racist! I think this book goes beyond black and white; maybe that's the only thing readers see and expect, which causes the reader to already have preconceptions of the novel before even reading it, thus ruining the whole point of the novel which is to tell reader's how opposed Twain was to slavery. And if this is the case, I don't think that the novel is for them at all! Not to be redundant, but I cannot stress enough how "real" Twain writes; I mean a reader must recognize this and appreciate it, because it is a lesson; Twain crosses many boundaries with racial slurs and satire and exaggeration, all these are his stylistic devices that tell the reader how wrong slavery was. So if the novel pisses you off, GOOD! That's the intent, you should be angry about the practice of slavery. I recommend this advanced, informative novel to high school students, this is a key to our past, take advantage of it and learn a thing or to about American history first hand from Mark Twain!

Research Paper on Literary Theory

Research Paper on Literary Criticism

After reading and researching the different ways of criticizing literature, I realized that I do not follow with any one way of processing information; I am a mixture of many of them. This is a better way to view literature and life in general because it gives more than one point of view.

When I first read about the psychological way to criticize literature, I thought that explained how I thought. I love novels that have other meanings other than what is blatantly obvious. In high school, I read a book by Carson McCullers, The Ballad of the Sad Cafe. The way the book was written intrigued me not only because of the story it told, but the way it was told. The entire story was written in the format of a ballad, not only because the ending and beginning were the same, but the way the language flowed was much like a song, with rhythm and meaning.
__________________________________________________________

__________________________________________________________

During high school, I spent some time in France. I was lucky enough to be able to see both the Louvre and the modern art museum in Paris. These were one of the best parts of my trip. I was able to just look at a sculpture or painting and admire the smooth lines of the piece or the way the artist used color in the landscape. I was content with just looking at something so beautiful, like the Winged Victory, and appreciate it for what it was. I did not have to wonder at why the artist chose such a subject or why he carved what he did. This shows how I can view things from a formalist point of view.

I also think that a novel does have some meaning in and of itself, however, I believe that the person reading it also gives it the majority of its meaning. Although the author may have meant to say one thing, the reader will in most cases interpret it as something completely different. I approach literature with this same notion. I know that I can never know exactly why the author wrote what they did, short of talking to them exclusively. I think that it is important to have a different perspective than someone else, including the author.

In addition, your perceived meaning of a work can and most likely will change if you read the book again. Things may happen in your life that my change the way you view things. For example, if we had read Pattern Recognition before the events of September 11th, the meaning of the book would have been very different from how we viewed it originally.

When I drew the grouping diagram in class of what is important to me, I noticed a major trend. The things such as family, friends, love and happiness were above me. The things that were below me were school, future, career and job. I think that this shows what is really important to me, and what influences me, which are the things above me. The things below me are the things that I influence, in other words, they are what I put myself into. I think that since such things as art and beauty are so important to me, I can appreciate things for their aesthetic value, as stated above.

I included the diagram I made in class to perhaps why I view things the way that I do. Music and art and beauty are especially important to me, and that comes into play when I read any piece of literature. The things such as success, money and future are not as important to me, therefore this shows one of the things I am not. I do not view the world as a struggle between the wealthy and the working class. I especially do not see this in literature. Therefore, I am not a believer in Marxist theory. I am much more interested in how the characters relate to each other, as well as how they change in response to the changing plot.

I also believe that there the world exists in a balance of good and evil, and that there is a sense of karma or that what goes around comes around. When I read a book, I look for that sense of circular continuance. In other words, I look for the "bad guy" to get what is coming to him and the princess to end up with the prince.

Since the beginning of class however, I have begun to take a more philosophical approach to reading literature. Until now, I had not known much about Freud, Derrida or Fossard, but now I see how they can be connected to literature. I agree with Freud that literature is only a day dream made public. After all, dreams are only thoughts, and novels and poems, even articles in the newspaper all start out as thoughts.

Because I have so many ways of looking at literature, I can fit the piece into a certain area of "my world". I can value a book simply because its interesting to read, or I can dissect it and see how the patterns in the book fit the patterns in my life. Either way all the aspects that have influenced me and that u have influence upon play a part in which I process information whether it be a poem or the news.

I think that many critics are like me in that the may believe in any number of theories. The critics on the critical inquiry website showed at least two theories, no one was totally one way or the other. I think that it is better if people view thins from more than one perspective. This works for life as well as for literature. The ability to see things in more than one way makes experiences interesting as well as gives a person a better perspective and understanding.

Research Paper on Hero

Hero Research Paper

What characteristics are required for one to be considered a hero? According to ancient philosophy, there were many reasons why Gilgamesh, Achilles, and Aeneas were considered heroes. One of the main qualities that a hero has is that they have problems with women. Gilgamesh had a problem with sleeping with the women of his town. He felt that as his duty of being a ruler, it was his responsibility to sleep with the unwed women before their wedding days to truly determine in fact if they were virgins or not. Achilles has a problem with women in a sense that Agamemnon demands his Achille's war prize Briseis from him as a form of compensation, when it is found out that Agamemnon's prize Chrysies has caused the plague. Feeling insulted, Achilles decides to refuse to in the war any longer. Aeneas has a problem with women because the woman that he fell in love with, Dido decides to commit suicide after Aeneas departs to attempt to fulfill his duty to found Rome.
__________________________________________________________

__________________________________________________________

Avenging a wrong, especially the death of a loved one, is an important element of heroic culture. Gilgamesh mourns the death of his friend Enkindo. He was there to witness his death and has a part of himself die also, since Enkindo made him feel complete. After the death of his friend, Gilgamesh decides that he does not want to suffer like Enkindo did and he goes on a journey to seek mortality so that he doesn't end up like Enkindo. Achilles feels guilty because of the fact that his beloved friend Patroclus was killed by mistaken identity. Knowing that is should have been him who died; Achilles vows to avenge the death of Patroclus and goes after Hector, the killer of his friend. After returning from a voyage to Tiber, Aeneas is furious when he finds out that Pallas, the son of his ally Evander, has been killed. After a battle with Turnus who killed Pallas, Aeneas nearly spares his life, but after remembering the slain Pallus, instead finishes him off.

Although the concept of a hero still exists now in modern society, the qualifications and reasons behind the notion of a hero have changed. The term now a days is used in a much broader sense and pertains to a wide variety of people. It is now based on an individual's belief and can be categorized in different ways. In my personal opinion, the idea of a hero is a person who is willing to go out on the limb and put others first in order to better a situation. For example, the troop and members of the armed services who are across seas risking their lives to help protect us and our freedom. It is not something that they were forced to do, but they do it because they want to help their country. The people who helped with the events that took place on 9-11 are also heroes. Even in tragedy, the idea of a hero prevails and remains in our memories. For it are the heroes who make helped to make this world a better place.

Term Paper on Harley Davidson

Harley Davidson Research Paper

Bumpus Harley-Davidson in Murfreesboro shows signs of a great retail store through looking at their staff, service, and dedication to customers. Timmy Glenn, store manager, stays busy coordinating daily tasks to keep Bumpus at the top of the list for those shopping for motorcycle products. All employees work together to serve the Murfreesboro area with the service and quality that is expected with Harley-Davidson products.

To identify goals for the staff and to let the customer know what is to be expected when they shop at Bumpus, Mr. Glenn constructed a mission statement. The statement welcomes customers to the store and lets them know that Bumpus "takes pride in fulfilling your motorcycle dreams by providing the highest quality products and services our customers deserve."
__________________________________________________________

__________________________________________________________

Mr. Glenn defined the target market as "any person seeking the enjoyment and freedom of owning a motorcycle or searching for accessories to enhance their experience." The target market can be narrowed down much further, but Mr. Glenn stated that many times people do not realize that a motorcycle is what they are looking for until they walk into the store. For this reason Bumpus tries to be as widely available as possible. The store does a lot of business with people buying gifts for motorcycle enthusiasts. Those people may not aware of the store if the advertising is not done on a wide scale.

When it comes to advertising for Bumpus, up to %90 is done by a contracted marketing agency. This agency concentrates heavily on radio spots followed by the local newspaper. Bumpus also keeps an extensive database on any customer who buys from them or registers on a mailing list. A quarterly newsletter (see attached) is sent to the people and is designed by the marketing agency with help from each department at Bumpus Harley-Davidson. This newsletter has coupons and displays specials for the term. It also informs readers of events in which Bumpus will be involved. Many of the promotional events are determined at the beginning of the year from proposals and past annual events. Mr. Glenn said that any event is a possibility, but will be considered only if it is a respectable occurrence that will be a good alignment for Bumpus and for the event if Bumpus participates. The advertising budget is determined at the beginning of each year based on unit sales from the last year.

Bumpus Harley-Davidson offers its current customers and those to become customers many specialty services. Mr. Glenn told me the way you treat the customer and how much you offer them is very important in the motorcycle business. He said, "Motorcycles and accessories are expensive and you must take care of the customers so that they are getting more than what they paid for." Bumpus offers in-house financing, a fully stocked clothing department, accessories and performance parts, and a customization and maintenance shop. They offer pick-up and delivery of motorcycles to be detailed or repaired. The shop also offers highly skilled mechanics that can make a bike a one-of-a-kind. Bumpus offers these services to customers so that they do not have to travel to different places to get the bike and accessories that they demand.

Both new and quality used bikes are sold at Bumpus. They gladly take trade-ins on new bike and then refurbished the used bike to sell to others customers. Their products are highly sought after because of the quality and excitement associated with Harley Davidson. Their clothing department has shirts, pants, leather goods, helmets, and collectibles. The accessory department consists of parts to make the bike sound better, look hotter, or go faster. The shop is always ready to install the parts that customers select for their bikes.

Bumpus Harley-Davidson is maintaining a strong retail strategy to continue serving people in the area with quality and service. Timmy Glenn heads up a great sales and service retail store that has acquired great success.

Andrei Sakharov Essay

Andrei Sakharov Essay

Throughout history, societies have practiced the erroneous concept that by imprisoning or destroying a person, they can also destroy the ideas that this person believes in and espoused. Many people have stood up against governments or societies because they feel that the government was committing a crime against its citizens. When one person stands up to a large and powerful government, the government tries to destroy his beliefs by destroying him. Most times his beliefs live on even if he is murdered by the government. His Beliefs live on by other people seeing what the government is doing and then standing up for what they feel is right. Andrei Sakharov is one of these people who saw a government doing something unjust and decided to stand up for what was right. He saw that what he had built for the Soviet Union, the Hydrogen bomb, was dangerous and he also felt it was wrong the way they were testing the bomb. He was then exiled for standing up for what he believed in.
__________________________________________________________

__________________________________________________________

Andrei Sakharov was born in Moscow, Russia on May 21, 1921. At a young age Sakharov learned respect for work, mastery of one's profession, and decency towards other human beings. He went of to be one of the most brilliant students of his class at the University of Moscow were he majored in physics. He was exiled from World War II because of his studies of Physics. He was employed for a few years as an engineer and patented several inventions. After the war with Germany, he was recruited into the Soviets top-secret Nuclear Weapons Program were he went onto be known as the father of the Soviet hydrogen bomb. He soon saw that he had helped create a great monster.

In 1957, Sakharov saw the damages nuclear weapons had on the environment. He wrote a pioneering article on the effects of low-level radiation. Sakharov also would not contribute anymore research to the Soviet Nuclear Weapons Program. With in ten years his work took a more civic tone. In 1964 he led a group of prominent intellectuals and artists to stop the rehabilitation of Stalin. He then emerged dramatically in the human-rights struggle and became the movement's inspiration, with the publishing of his essay "Reflection on Progress, Coexistence and Intellectual Freedom". He urged an end to the cold war, and a reconstruction of the Soviet Union and the rest of the World.

Sakharov believed that the Soviet Union needed much reform. He wanted a halt to be called all nuclear weapons tested in the USSR. He also pushed for the World wide nuclear disarmament. Sakharov has a large advocate for human rights, which was seen as treason in the Soviet Union. He was also a leader in the defense of prisoners of conscience, which were people imprisoned by the Soviet Union because of what the believed about the USSR. Sakharov was also against the military action against Afghanistan in December 1979.

For Sakharov's civil disobedience, which was seen as treason to the Soviet government, he and his family were exiled to the Gorky, 250 miles east of Moscow on January 22, 1980. He was never charged, tried before a court of law, or convicted. Sakharov was seen as a "Judas" and a "lad rat of the west". They say him as trying to undermine the Soviet Union for the Western World.

Sakharov's ideas did live on after his exile and his death. For one he was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1975, even though he was not given a visa to leave his country. His work help start the Moscow Limited Test Ban Treaty in 1963. A decade and a half pasted before his Nobel Peace Prize showed any change in civil rights for the Soviet Union. In June 1989, at the First Congress of People's Deputies, Sakharov appealed for a radical reformation of the Soviet system and for an end to the Communist Party's dictatorship. Only a few days before his death, he completed a draft of a new constitution for the "Union of Soviet Republics of Europe and Asia."

After his exile, he was a free man for less than three years, but these were the years when the totalitarian colossus began to crumble. Andrei Sakharov witnessed the fall of the Berlin Wall, and the beginning of irreversible changes that swept Russia. He also saw his ideas, his steadfast, uncompromising dedication to truth and justice, shared by thousands of people in his country. In his endeavor to "make good the demands of reason and create a life worthy of ourselves and of the goals we only dimly perceive," he revealed those rare qualities that distinguish genius from talent: the ability to identify the crucial element in complex situations, great originality, and an instinct for the currents of time. He also was never halted in his works for civil rights and nuclear disarmament, even after the Soviet Union tried to "control" his ideas by imprisoning him. He is a great example of a person not changing there ideas even while they are pressed to.

Research Paper on Homer

Research Paper on Homer

The Odyssey by Homer has been translated by several people. In these translations of The Story of Odysseus we can see the reflections of the Greek society in the classical period. We see the hospitality, loyalty, perseverance and vengeance that the Greeks bestowed in themselves. It also reflects upon the Greek politics of this time period and leaves us to imagine why the ancient Greeks found the story compelling.

Hospitality was a gesture that Greeks took great pride in. By inviting people into their homes to show their equality as humans and in return they wanted their own people to be showed the same kind of welcome and warmth when they traveled. The strangers/visitors are those that kept the Greeks up to date on what was taking place in other parts of the world. In The Odyssey we can see this taking place. The Phaeacians, Aeolus, Circe and the Lotus-eaters offer Odysseus help in some way. But at the same time the Sirens and the Cyclops definitely do not reflect this equal hospitality understanding. They are like the suitors that come into Odysseus's home and take advantage of the generosity that the Greeks withheld.
__________________________________________________________

__________________________________________________________

Penelope and her son Telemachus is the most obvious example of loyalty in this epic. Penelope faithfully waits for her husband for twenty years. The public tries to force her to pick a new husband from the suitors that had invaded her home but she holds her ground and does not give in. Although in the Greek society she belonged to Odysseus and would not even want to imagine what would happen to her upon his arrival home if she had taken one of the suitors for a husband. Telemachus also shows us his loyalty to his father with the suitors. But a less obvious one would be Eumeaus as he talks of his remarkable king and the royal family.

The journey home for Odysseus is the major reflection of perseverance. Odysseus makes it through ten years in the Trojan War and then it takes him ten years to return home going through many different obstacles. Since we consider Odysseus's obstacles perseverance then we can also count Penelope's invasion of the suitors perseverance. She has to be very clever and conniving to hold them off for several years waiting on her husband to return home.

The Greeks took vengeance out on people when they felt they had been wronged. Like when Odysseus killed the suitors for there lack of loyalty to him, his property and his family. Odysseus kills there leaders in a gory ways. By first putting and arrow through ones throat and an arrow through the others liver.

In this story we see how Greek politics works. The men of the town want Penelope to pick one of the suitors as her husband so that they can become the new King of Ithaca. They hope that Telemachus doesn't come to reign. Even though Zeus would make him earn the thrown and in the opening to all of this Telemachus could not obviously do that. The men invade the home of Penelope and take advantage of the hospitality that she holds because she is Greek. Then when Odysseus does return and kills the suitors for what they have done it shows us that even in Greek politics you were punished by death for certain crimes.

I think The Odyssey was so compelling to the ancient Greeks because the story held a little something for everyone. It was like a fairy tale but also like a thriller or mystery as to what was going to happen to Odysseus next. It also had romance if you paid close attention to Penelope's character. This book took one mans life for twenty years and showed everyone the struggles you can go through and the glory you can have if you believe and never give up until you have accomplished everything you set out to accomplish. Odysseus's story shows that there are such things as happy endings in life.

Term Paper on Mexico

Research Paper on Mexico

Summer 2002, my church took a mission trip to Mexico. We stayed in Harlingen, Texas at a hospitality house. The females, we stayed and taught vacation bible school, while our guys went into Mexico and built bunk beds the first two days, and they worked the last three days at a church down there.

On Monday night after our guys returned from working they hardly said a word to us. Most of them ate and then went to bed. Seeing the way these guys acted really hit everyone hard and the women we were anxious to see what were to be the conditions of living.

Thursday afternoon we first got the opportunity to go to a shopping area down there known as Progresso, Mexico. Seeing how these people acted was truly amazing. First seeing women sitting on the sidewalks with a cup in her hand and feeding her little children that sit next to her, so calmly, but you can sense sadness in there hearts, really puts emotions on your heart.

You cannot buy stuff off of the little children down there either, because they instantly run and tell there friends what you look like to try and go see if you will buy something off of them. It can rip you apart because you would love to help all these children, but there is just not possible way.

Our next visit was the church that our guys were working on. It was a rough ride getting over there. One, the highway had four lances, but two of the lanes are like our shoulders on our highways. Secondly, once getting to town, they had one main street and the side streets are dirt. It would be rough getting around after a rainstorm.

When we arrived at the church we had brought leftover chicken from lunch for our guys to eat. Well one of the guys threw their chicken bone on the side of the church and one of the little kids that was watching our men eat ran over and picked up the bone and gnawed on it until there was nothing left on the bone.

Families live in homes that are the size of our schools office. They have dirt floors and their siding is old billboards. A month's wages for a family is $40.00. How do they live off of this salary, nobody really understands.

The city wide dump, people pay $.50 to go and pick out of the trash to gather food or anything that they could possible salvage to use in the homes, or put to good use, maybe to even sell for money. Can you believe the day the dump trucks come to dump all their garbage, people are lined up for almost a mile outside of the gates to come in and pick out of the trash.

City streets and rivers full of trash, it's amazing all the trash you see around their area. From all of the trash around the area it just puts out an awful stench. How they can live like that is interesting, around here we would complain twenty-four seven about something that smells so awful.

You know though, they live like that because they honestly don't know any different. That is how they live and their government shows them to live. We as Americans take too much for granted. Would we be able to survive off of just $40.00 a month and be as happy as the people of Mexico are? No, we are raised to acquire anything that we want. To me it was a great blessing to see how differently lifestyles change over a stretch of land between the United States and Mexico. It truly makes you proud that you are an American.

Research Paper on African Elephant

Research Paper on African Elephant

Elephants are among the biggest animals in the world, they are the second tallest, and are the only animals that have a long muscular snout and two long, curved tusks. They are highly intelligent and very strong animals. Elephants are the largest land animals and have life spans of 60 years or more. They prove to be extraordinary animals.

There are two main types of elephants, the African elephant and the Indian elephant. The elephant that I have chosen is the African Elephant. The African elephant can be found in Africa, south of the Sahara, where the climate conditions are dry and hot.

Elephant reproduction is unique in many ways. The male genitals are inside the body whereas the female reproductive organs are on the outside; they are very hard to see. It is difficult to tell the two genders apart, which is often a problem when trying to find a mate. The mammary glands on the female which are the same size and shape as the breast of a woman help to identify the gender of an elephant. Another way to identify the gender is the shape of the skulls. Mating is a process, which takes place over the period of a year. Elephants are not predators as they are herbivores, and they are only prey when they are in their younger years.

The elephant species is not a solitary animal. The elephants live in herds. The average herd contains six to twelve members, but it is very common to have a herd of over twelve members. There are two different herds; one herd consists of only women who are called cows, and their children. The other is a herd that only consists of men which are called bulls. The female herd is led by the oldest member who is called the matriarch. When the matriarch dies the oldest child will take its place as leader. When the men are children they stay with their mothers, but as they grow older they leave the cows and join the bulls. Elephants are migratorial animals as they move around a lot.

The elephant's long trunk plays a very important role in the elephant getting food. The trunk grabs the food and puts it into the elephant's mouth. The typical elephant will eat for fifteen to twenty hours per day. An adult elephant eats 75 to 150 kg (165 to 330 lb) of food each day. Its diet includes many plant parts - leaves, twigs, bark, shoots, fruit, flowers, roots, tubers, and bulbs. They have a large appetite.

Elephants have a total of four teeth, all molars, which have jagged ridges for grinding leaves, stems, and roots. A single tooth can weigh more than 5 kg (11 lb) and measure 30 cm (12 in) in length. Their tusks are used to dig for water, to lift objects, and to defend themselves. The tusks themselves can lift 900kg (2000 pounds). Elephants grow six sets of molars during its lifetime; every set consists of four molars

The feet of the elephant are also very unique. Each foot is nearly round and each foot has a thick pad of tissue which acts as a cushion. This thick tissue is what makes the foot unique, when the foot is pressed down the tissue expands increasing the size of the foot and absorbs all the weight. When the foot is lifted the tissue contracts decreasing the size of the foot. The back two feet of the elephant have three toes and the front feet have four or five toes.

The elephants have a very simple digestive system. The stomach is not used to break down much food because its main function is storage. When the food then reaches the stomach; it acts as a big storage facility. The feces travel through the small intestines, then through the rear-end. Scientists often use feces to determine the size of an elephant. Food passes quickly through the digestive system before nutrients are absorbed, causing elephants to discard about half the plant material they consume.

The circulatory system of the elephant can be quite complex. It can have a heart that weighs up to twenty eight pounds which beats at rates up to 28/min when standing, and 32/min when sitting or lying. Due to the huge size of the arteries they are supported by elastic fibers. The blood vessels can reach a length of up to 350cm.

An elephant has no pleural cavity. The lungs of the elephant are directly attached to the walls of the chest cavity and the diaphragm. This means that all respiratory movements are completely dependent on chest muscles. The air enters the lungs through internal nares which are located on the forehead. An elephant can also breathe air through its mouth and trunk. Elephants must have a strong muscular system in order to be able to support all their weight. Many of their muscles are located in the trunk because they have to be able to turn over logs and it is also used in defending themselves.

The African elephant's eyesight is not very good. It uses its big ears for ventilation and communication. Elephants have good hearing due to their large ears. The elephants make sounds which humans cannot hear which are called infrasound. The elephants can communicate from a distance of 4km.An elephant can raise its trunk in the air and it can smell food or enemies. It can smell a human 1.6 km away. The sense of touch is the keenest sense on the elephant, because the trunk has many sensory hairs at the end of the trunk, which allows it to feel how big the object is and the shape of the object.

The skeletal system of the elephant has to be very strong to support the massive amount of weight of the elephant. It weighs about 16.5 percent of an elephant's total weight. Normally an elephant will have twenty ribs. The back bone is where the soft tissues are hung from. The bones on an elephant interlock. The neck has seven vertebrae.

The color of an elephant depends a lot on the surroundings in which it lives, because the elephant is continuously throwing mud on itself to keep itself cool in the hot climate. When an elephant is born it is covered with sparse brown, black or reddish brown hair that eventually falls off as the elephant gets older. When older the elephants seem hairless, but they do have bristles around the ears, mouth, eyes, and some hair on the trunk, legs and other parts of the body. An elephant has a lot of hair on its tail sometimes reaching lengths of up to 100cm. Some scientists say it is used to swat flies of its body. The skin of an elephant is very sensitive.

Over the many scientific tests and research done on African elephants they have proven to be very unusual and unique animals. They are still studied a great deal today will be studied for many years to come.
