Outside my academics, I have chosen to live a majority of my life dancing. On average, I dance 17 hours a week. Dance has become a very important part of who I am, and has shaped me in many ways. I feel that when I decided seven years ago to start dancing, I gave myself the opportunities to experience life’s lessons in a whole other aspect. I have benefited a great deal from dance that I feel will help me throughout life. It has bestowed upon me many characteristics: organization and time management skills, motivation and dedication, focus and discipline, and lastly team and leadership skills.

For the past three years, I have chosen to be involved in many activities: school, work, and my favorite, dance. After 30 hours of school, 10 hours of studying, 20 hours of work a week, I still manage to have my fun and dance. Every morning before school I wake up at 5:45 to attend a two-hour mandatory dance practice for my schools’ team. I also go to a dance studio in my local town and dance on their team for 6 hours a week. I do this because in order to do what I love and achieve the physical and spiritual happiness I have to make some choices in how I spend my time. I have to manage my time with school, studying to keep up my 3.8 GPA, work, and still dance. Consequently, I sometimes have to put my social life at the bottom of my importance list. I feel the management skills I have learned will help me greatly as I approach my college adventure for I am quite aware of the many things that will be thrown at me, and the many tasks I am going to have to juggle while acquiring my education.

Motivation and dedication are some of the many attributes gained through dance. When being apart of any team there are times of failure, times when an individual is brought down and feels like he or she is at their very end, and times when one wants to give up and stop caring. At times like this, motivation and dedication are what helps them push through their difficulties.

Motivation and dedication are there to remind he or she what they are doing and why they are there. Because in life, there are no short cuts to any place worth going. Therefore in dance, I do it because it is who I am and what I love to do. Dance has also motivated me to become a better person. It has motivated me to follow more of a straight and narrow pathway to success, instead of being distracted by negative influences. I feel that with these attributes I am already one step ahead of others, who have not yet experienced this, which in turn will help me greatly in college. Being dedicated to something so much means putting it first. Not only in your heart and head, but also with your everyday living. You can accomplish this by prioritizing what you need to do versus what you want to do. All together with the greatest lesson, I have learned to never give up no matter what obstacles lay in my path. “Obstacles don’t have to stop you. If you run into a wall, don’t turn around and give up. Figure out how to climb it, go around it, or work through it.” -Michael Jordan.

In part with motivation and dedication comes focus and discipline. In any thing you do in life, you should have goals. Goals are a point of satisfaction toward something which effort is directed. People with goals succeed because they know where they are going. It is important to have goals to keep you on track. Goals also help with what is expected of you in what you are taking part of, whether it is dance, football, choir, or the chess club. It takes generous amounts of focus to keep that goal in mind. Discipline is also a key factor in achieving that goal.

There are many forms of discipline. Through dance, discipline takes a big part starting with your body and the way you take care of it. This includes all aspects among the obvious of not drinking, smoking, or the use of illegal substances. Many other forms of discipline include eating right to get the needed amount of energy, getting enough sleep to maintain your body’s physical wellness, and the conditioning of your body’s bones and muscles to prevent injury. Dance has taught me to become very disciplined and focus, but most importantly to use that discipline and focus, and channel it towards the tasks at hand. In school, it is my work and grades, at home, it is my family, and soon to be in college with the new responsibilities I am going to face.

In college, team and leadership skills are very crucial. This last year in dance I was chosen to be captain for my team. I feel the responsibilities of being a captain have helped me prepare for college in many ways. When placed in a leadership position of a team you are faced with many more responsibilities, and your expectations are set higher than others are. You are the one that holds the team together. They count on you to do your job. When times get tough, you are the motivator for the team. You cannot show frustration and weakness in any form. I have not only been on a team through dance, but at work and in my home as well. Anytime there is a group of people working together to achieve one common goal that is a team. When I think of a team one phrase comes to mind, “There is no “I” in TEAM!” When apart of a team you are not working for yourself. You are working for the benefit of the team. Seeking the medical degree that I am, I feel strong personal skills is what’s needed to take the initiative and lead any team. Most importantly to fulfill the job requirements successfully.

All together dance has influenced me greatly and is the one choice I made in my childhood that has benefited me the most. Dance has taught me organization, time management, motivation, dedication, focus, discipline, team, and leadership skills that are all very important skills needed for college.
