Essay on Graffiti

Essay on Graffiti

Research was done at State University. The research was an inquiry about graffiti and the frequency of graffiti in male and female bathrooms. A bathroom stall gives the student a chance to express him or herself without any outside influence. The student could write about politics, sex, race and many other matters. There are factors that can influence the amount of graffiti in the restrooms. Such as gender, it could be more likely that one gender would have more pieces of graffiti than the other. Another factor is the range of population. What is the nationality or race of the student?

In the past researchers have focused on graffiti and sex differences. Most findings have been not consistent. For example, some studies demonstrated that females write more graffiti than males (Ahmed, 1981). In other studies they have shown that male write more graffiti then females (Arluke, Kutakoff, Levin, 1987). The only consistent fact in past studies is that male restrooms tend to have more sexual occurrence (Otta, 1993;Arluke, Kutakoff, Levin, 1987). The other most consistent fact is that female restrooms tend to be more creative and romantic (Otta, 1993).

Similar to previous research the men’s restroom did have more names information (Otta, 1993;Arluke, Kutakoff, Levin, 1987). According to (Arluke, Kutakoff, Levin, 1987) the amount of graffiti in the men’s room could be attributed to many facts. One fact could be that men are expressing their thoughts or they are feeling that they must fulfill a certain traditional male role. Whereas in women graffiti tended be creative. Maybe women used the private stall as a way to communicate their thoughts and feelings.

Researchers will continue to explore for more of an understanding of graffiti and the link with gender. Research in the future should focus on the link between the too.
