"Good afternoon ladies and gentleman! My name is Dr. Reynolds and am here representing the Asian firm H&R, Health and Radiation. I've gathered you here today to talk about this serious problem, which involves the life of 3000 kids who have been affected by the explosion at Chernobyl's reactor.

About a month ago I was sent by the company with a group of scientists to investigate the town of Narodichi, which's 60 km west from Chernobyl. When we arrived we found a very nice little town, full of gardens and parks which unluckily have 13 to 17 times the normal radiation levels. Believe it or not, this place has been inhabited by thousands of people for more than 5 years. Ivan Sedjoli, the local schoolmaster, informed us of some tormenting figures. Originally there used to be around 10.000 children in the region, and now this number has decreased to 3000. And what is worse not a single one could avoid being polluted by radiation. In a few years time, there would be absolutely no one left alive in the place.

As you may know, these kids are still under a state of shock and must be specially treated as none of them is healthy. They live a life of loneliness and isolation, and many of them don't even dare talking. In the near future this kids are bound to have even more health troubles, such as cancer, and many will have children with malformations; or even worse, some won't even be able to have babies. So let's meditate about this issue. Can you imagine these poor kids life in a couple of years?

Well, that's why H&R is here for. We're here to offer this kids the chance of being born again and start a new life. We're here to let know that we're launching our annual project, this year it's: "A new life is coming!" and our goal is to help them. The project is divided into three parts in order of importance. The part consists in taking psychology experts to deal and talk with children. The idea is that children having trouble to talk and to express their feelings learn to overcome this and start talking more about their problems and concerns. Another part of our project consist in also taking pros to the area but in this case our suggestion is regarding gym and fun activities. We will teach the deaf-mutes to sing with their hands, we will make any sorts of sport activities for the ones with mobilization problems, and so on. The last and most difficult part of the project consists in taking visitors to Narodichi to be in contact with the kids and experience what life's like under radiation. We will provide visitors with special suits and radiation detectors in order to have a safe and pleasurable three-hour visit to the town.

However, this project requires a lot of money to be on wheels and here's where you can make the change! We need your collaboration and help to start building the project up. We are welcoming any voluntary people willing to take part in the project. We are receiving donations here at school, any kind of donations, but we would appreciate if you could contribute with money as the most important. Any of you who wish to join us will be rewarded with a free three-our visit to the town as a demonstration of gratitude.

So remember, these kids are depending on us, and that their possibility to smile again is in our hands. You know we often complain about not having the life we had always wished, or even we protest about not having enough. And we want more and more each time, and we don't realize that next to us is someone whose life has been changed one day to the other by something he even didn't have control of. Let's put our whims aside and start building up a new life for these kids who are calling for our help!

Araby by James Joyce has a very strong sense of isolation and alienation. The young boy in the story was probably about fourteen, maybe fifteen years old and he was just starting to discover his sexual interest and attraction to girls. The story never goes far enough to reveal the narrator's name, or the name of the girl that he was so in love with.

The story probably took place in the 1960s maybe 1970s, and it was probably set in the city. The young boy lives with his aunt and uncle, so the reader can assume that his parents died. The boy seems pretty happy in the very beginning of the story when he is playing outside with his friend Mangan. Later, when the boy had to go home, his mood and thoughts seemed to switch and become more on a depressed level. The boy seems very isolated and alienated from a lot of the world. The story starts out by describing the boy's street as being "blind" (meaning a dead end street). It also describes the houses as "gazing at one another". This gives off a strong feeling of a dark, lonely, and isolated neighborhood.

A priest previously had lived with the boy and his aunt and uncle. The priest, however, had died in the back drawing room of the house. The boy went into the room one day. He described the air as very musty. He also described a waste basket in the room as very littered and dusty. While the boy was in this room all by himself, I got the feeling that he probably felt very lonely and maybe even depressed. This house was apparently on the larger side, and since there were currently only the three of them living in it, it probably got very quiet and dark.

The reader can tell by the conversations the boy has with his aunt and uncle that he does not have a very close relationship with them. When the boy reminded his uncle in the morning that he wanted to go to the bazaar in the evening, his uncle responded very curtly with a simple "Yes boy, I know". Later on in the evening when the boy's uncle came home, he was drunk, so naturally his wife got mad at him. This part in the story shows that the aunt and uncle probably do not have a very good relationship. Since his aunt and uncle do not have a very good relationship, they probably do not talk to each other all that much. This only would cause more silence and isolation in the house. The boy probably felt very alone and unwanted.

When the boy finally got to leave and go to the Araby bazaar, it was late and dark. The described the train carriage he was on as very deserted. He continued on to describe how slowly the train was moving. When the train passed a crowd of people, the porters moved them back and told them that it was a special train for the bazaar. This also symbolized the sense of alienation; this train was different from the others, it was "special". The poor boy must have felt lonely and maybe even scared sitting all alone in the big train car as it moved so slowly.

The boy promised the girl that he was infatuated with, Mangan's sister, that he would bring her a present from the bazaar. When he got to the bazaar, the time was ten minutes until ten o'clock pm. The bazaar was getting ready to close for the night so there were only a few booths open. The boy was once again alone as he shopped. He described how most of the stalls were closed for the night but there was one that was still open. When he was looking at the stuff in the stall to see what he could bring back for Mangan's sister. The young lady behind the stall was talking to a couple of guys when she noticed him there. She asked him quite rudely if he wanted to buy anything. Once again the boy felt very out of place because of the way this girl had treated him. She belittled him in many ways. Instead of really trying to help him, she blew him off.

When the boy was leaving the bazaar, he described how dark everything was. He described himself as a creature driven and derived by vanity. He was filled with anger and anguish. He was so upset because he had been so foolishly blinded by Mangan's sister, and he didn't even really know her because she had only spoken to him once! He was angry and in many was disgusted with himself.

The author really wanted the reader to see the isolation and alienation that took place in this story. He really wanted the reader to be able to read the story through the boy's eyes so that they could feel the story. The author told this story in first person so that the reader could see how isolated the boy felt.

Adolf Hitler's talents were very limited in his early years of life. He failed at school and as an artist. Only when he became involved in politics in the 1920's that he showed his true colors. Enthusiastic, alarmingly single minded and a brilliant speaker, he rose to lead the Nazi party and then, in 1933, his country.

Among the many smaller political parties at the time was the very right-wing National Socialist party, the Nazis. Hitler as leader, of this party, could arouse large crowds with passionate speeches. Other politicians ridiculed him, but many German people found him strong and convincing. He offered solutions for Germany's problems. He said the communists and Jews were to blame.

In 1929, many businesses went down due to the depression. By 1932, 6 million people had lost their jobs, and families were suffering terrible hunger and misery. Due to the depression many people voted for Hitler and his party, as people saw Hitler as an answer to a lot of the countries problems. In 1933 he was legally appointed chancellor.

Hitler achieved what he had promised he would do. He wiped out all political parties that opposed him, trade unions were destroyed and the Nazi party became the leading power in Germany. By this time Hitler had become Dictator and could make laws as he chose. His state was based on legalized terror.

By the end of the depression Germany had become strong again by drafting thousands of men into the army and preparing for battle, secretly at first but then more and more openly. This broke the terms of the Versailles Treaty but Britain and France did nothing to stop them. By 1937, everyone was employed. For many Germans, living standards had become much better.

By this point, Hitler began to expand Germany by taking over Austria and Czechoslovakia. Then on the 1st of September 1939, Hitler ordered the invasion of Poland. France and Britain had previously agreed to help Poland, and two days later they declared war on Germany. World War 2 had officially begun.

There was a seven month break then Hitler finally ordered the attack on Denmark and Norway, which they conquered easily. Next the Nazi troops conquered France. By June 1940 almost all of central Europe was controlled by Hitler, and then Britain stood alone.

In Germany and the territories occupied by Hitler, a terrible thing was happening. Hitler always believed that the world owed all its troubles to the Jews. At the same time, he believed it was Germany's destiny to become the master race. Now Hitler put all his racist ideas into practice. He ordered the total extermination of the Jews. In Germany and the occupied countries, the Jews were made to wear the Star of David as identification, and they were rounded up and put into concentration camps. The fittest people were used as slave labour in Germany industry, but almost every Jew was killed.

Until 1942, it looked as if Hitler's leadership was very strong in war as it had been in peace. Drawing on the new found confidence the "Fuhrer" had inspired, Germany had swept aside all enemies except Britain and had driven deep into the Soviet Union. The triumphant campaigns of 1940 owed much to Hitler's strong support. And his stubborn determination, displayed in refusal to withdrawal during the winter of 1940-1942 probably saved his forces in Russia.

These spectacular early achievements held the seeds of future disaster, for they led Hitler to believe in his own invincibility and the sureness of his judgement. This produced many unwise, even foolish, decisions from the "ruler" of Europe.

The U.S army and British and Commonwealth troops invaded France and Sicily in 1944. In the east, the Soviet Union was repelling the German invasion from the west. So Germany was caught in between two huge armies, and cut off from essential supplies. The end was a matter time. On the 25th of April 1945, American and Russian troops "linked hands across the river Elbe" at Torgau. Soon after, Hitler committed suicide in Berlin and the German Forces surrendered on the 8th of May, 1945.

When Hitler was in power he showed that he was one of the most evil but greatest dictators that has ever lived, he helped his country get through economic problems during the depression and showed great brutality in his methods during World War II. By the time he was defeated he had broken down the whole structure of the world in which he lived, he had instigated a new era with even greater power and destruction.

Once upon a time, in a far away land of Britain in 1807, a soft silvery-white solid's existence was first established by Sir Humphrey Davy. Davy was born in Penzance and was an apprenticed surgeon. He named his discovery alumium. Of course, this name was re-spelt by later scientists. However, although Davy underlined the existence and named aluminium, he did not succeed in actually producing any. Davy made numerous attempts to isolate aluminium by electrolyzing a fused mixture of aluminium oxide and potash, but was clearly unsuccessful.

It took many years of painstaking research to unleash the metal from its evil ore bauxite, a very common hard clay-like material containing 40% of aluminium oxide. It was only in 1825, when a minute lump of Aluminium was produced by Hans Christian Oersted, a Danish chemist.

His work was further developed by Friederick Wohler of Germany in 1845, who successfully produced pin head sized aluminium.However, aluminium was considered expensive, as Oersted and Wohler's separation processes produced impure aluminium.

In 1886, aluminium was thought to have reached the peak of his fame. This costly and prized metal attracted a young American chemist by the name of Charles Martin Hall. He developed an inexpensive electrochemical method for the isolation of pure aluminium from aluminium-oxide.

Hall was born December 6th, 1863 in Thompson, Ohio. His interest in chemistry became evident whilst a student at Oberlin College. Hall's focus on developing a new process for extracting aluminium began when his professor, Frank Fanning Jewett, offered a challenge to the students.

They were to find an economical method by which aluminium can be purely extracted. After graduation, Hall continued this challenge and on February 23rd, he successfully produced globules of Aluminium metal.

Soon after, Hall formed the aluminium Company of America and became a multi-millionaire. Coincidently, Paul Heroult, a French chemist also discovered this inexpensive process at the same age and year as Hall. Today's history books tell us that Hall and Heroult independently invented this reduction process. However, it is said that Heroult made the first discovery. Both of these highly skilled chemists died in 1914. Thus, the commercially known chemical method is identified today as the Hall-Heroult process.

But not long after, the evil bauxite returned to cause more havoc. Until 1888, aluminium oxide remained trapped inside bauxite's clay-like realm and scientists had to work with small amounts of aluminium compounds. It took the brains of Karl Josef Bayer to unlock bauxite's secret. Bayer was born in 1847 in Germany and studied at the University of Heidelberg. His economic discovery is known today as the Bayer Process, which produces alumina (aluminium oxide) from bauxite. This process is vital for the production of aluminium metal. The Bayer Process and Hall-Heroult Process are widely used today.

Aluminium grew up to be a spectacular metal. In fact, it by far outshone copper in the metal family! This young family member is highly beneficial to us, as it provides reliable, safe and economical solutions to many problems.

Thanks to Sir Humphrey Davy, the element of the Periodic Table are all very pleased to have Aluminium as an addition to the family. Karl Bayer did us all a good deed to rid Alumina from Bauxite, Hall and Heroult combined their work to discover aluminium's independence and alumium himself proved to us that you don't have to be the heaviest, the noblest or the most malleable element of them all to shine. aluminum is currently living at atomic number 13 in the transition metals family. At one hundred and ninety six, he couldn't feel better!

The first thing that strikes us as Maximus being a hero is his values. Maximus showed many mixed values throughout the movie, one of them being his family values. Maximus loved his family more than anything in the world. His family was his motivation. When his family was murdered, this main motivation evolved into revenge. Revenge urged him along, however, this did not make him a more violent person. In fact, revenge made him a humble, more gullible person. During the course of the film, Maximus kept most of his emotions within himself. This personal characteristic contributes to the fact that he is a hero. A hero can not show emotion towards enemies or anything around him as he is required to be well focused on the task ahead, in this case, in the saving of Rome. The people of Rome urged Maximus on to rebel against Commodus. Maximus took this small striving power to take on something he never dreamed of defeating, the emperor of Rome. All Maximus wanted, when he became a gladiator, was to do the right thing by Rome.

Maximus also had very good leadership skills. People above him respected and honored him. An example of such a person, shown in the film, was Marcus Aurelius. Marcus wanted Maximus to lead Rome. The people of Rome inspired Maximus to push harder and try a little harder. Rome heartened Maximus to refute against Commodus in every possible way. It takes a great leader to rebel against someone who has the power to murder your family and get away with it. Also evident of his great leadership skills, Maximus united all the gladiators into a team. The gladiators fought battles that were very highly stacked against them. Maximus built the gladiators up into a team and claimed "it's the only way we'll survive".

Along with Maximus sheer strength in general, he required more than this to defeat Commodus and save Rome. Maximus was very determined to face what lay ahead. He never gave up after his family's lives were taken from him. Maximus never lost track of what was going on. He stayed focused on the task and did not get caught in self-pity. Maximus used all these things and built almost a family of his own, with the gladiators. Maximus teamed up with Juba, Djimon Mounson and Haegan, Ralph Moeller. They united all the gladiators and won battles that only the greats of Rome would have been victorious in. The gladiators were put in almost definite death situations but determination and passion kept them alive. Maximus friend Cicero, played by Tony Flanagan, helped him on his quest also. Not only was Maximus brave but also Cicero was brave enough to go to Rome and risk everything for Maximus.

In conclusion, I believe Maximus is a true hero. Although revenge was Maximus main motivation, he is still a hero because it does not matter what your motivation is, as long as you mean well. He used resources around him to his advantage. He had the right motivation for the job, and thankfully for him he knew the right people to help him when he was in need. These people would not help Maximus if there was not any respect for one another. Maximus only showed emotion when it was appropriate. After all, he is only human.

Ideas are selected based on the purpose and context of the speech, and articulated by techniques which present them most effectively. The contrasting ways in which values and attitudes can be presented are evident in the different perspectives on the value of patriotism presented in Abraham Lincoln's Gettysburg Address and Emma Goldman's Address to the Jury. Similarly the attitude to war displayed in Lincoln's speech is contrasted by the sombre undertones of Paul Keating's eulogy for The Unknown Soldier. These values and attitudes contrast because of the differing purpose and context of each speech.

Lincoln's Gettysburg Address was delivered during the American Civil War, in 1863, at a cemetery, after a multitude of soldiers had perished. He was there to dedicate a new military cemetery, but his real purpose was to reassure the people, inspire the soldiers and proclaim the desired future. The speech has been considered by some as simple war propaganda and it was not very well received at the time. Yet the ideas presented, like the future direction of the nation, and the values of patriotism and democracy that resonate so clearly in the brief speech, cannot be so easily dismissed.

The structure of the address is central to its clarity. It moves clearly and logically from the past, to the present, and onto the future. In doing this, he identified himself with his audience, then payed respect to those who had died, and moved on to inspiring the audience. His choice of diction to emphasize this structure is also significant. When speaking of the present he uses phrases like "we are" and "we have", identifying himself with his people. This technique also allows him to articulate the future, democratic direction of the country, an idea that needed to be included to reassure the people of the validity of the civil war.

Lincoln uses repetition effectively to express the main themes and ideas. When speaking of the present and the civil war he uses the word great three times emphasizing the "great civil war", "great battlefield" and later the "great task". The idea of war as being "great" contributes to the reception of the speech as pure propaganda, but it must be labelled this to inspire the troops, thus executing the purpose of the speech. The word "people" is also repeated three times in the last sentence, emphasizing the democratic ideals they are fighting for. By repeating these words he inspires his people, underlining what it is they are fighting in, and what exactly they are fighting for.

Patriotism and Democracy are values also explored by Emma Goldman in her Address to the Jury, but they are articulated very differently. This is due mainly to the contrasting contexts. Whereas Lincoln was speaking to his people as leader, Goldman is addressing a jury as defendant, in the midst of a world war in 1917. While this speech is quite a logical, sophisticated and well expressed argument, it can be read as the self serving, self praising of a self proclaimed martyr.

Goldman appeals to patriotism in a different manner to Lincoln. She recognizes this to be a prevailing value in the time of war, and also recognizes that she may be considered unpatriotic (charges of conspiracy are rarely becoming for a patriot), but attempts to make the jury understand her interpretation of patriotism. She uses historical references to prove her point, by stating that "those who fought and bled for your liberties were in their time considered as being against the law". She then alludes to the American War of Independence "they carried out their ideas by throwing tea into the Boston Harbor." The theme of patriotism is prominent in the speech, as Goldman sees that as a fault the jury will perceive in her, and acts to address it, articulating the idea differently to Lincoln, but equally effectively.

Similarly, Goldman questions the democratic values of her audience. She uses rhetorical questions to make the audience truly respond, if only mentally, to her words, to question the validity of the charges against her. She pleads, "Is there only one kind of resistance?" "Shall free speech and free assemblage, shall criticism and opinion " which even the espionage bill did not include " be destroyed? Shall it be trampled underfoot?" Her use of erotesis is masterful here as the questions beg obvious, but difficult answers.

Goldman continues to appeal to the inherent values of her audience. The white male jury were all probably patriotic, democratic and Christian, so this is the next value Goldman targets. She uses Biblical references to articulate her appeal to these values, comparing herself to Jesus when she asks the jury to, "Bear in mind that he was put to death by those who considered his views as being against the law", and asking, "Are we to be held responsible for something which is as unchangeable and unalienable as the very stars hanging in the heavens unto time and all eternity?" It becomes clear that through erotesis, historical and biblical allusions Goldman has articulated her ideas to target the foremost goals of her audience.

Lincoln's view of patriotism was a conventional one, of a man doing his duty for his county, yet Goldman challenged this value, claiming that the greatest patriots were those who rebelled against the system. In Keating's Eulogy for the Unknown Soldier, he takes the conventional approach for the value of patriotism, yet his attitude towards war differs greatly form Lincoln's, as a reflection of his context.

Keating's purpose was obviously to give a eulogy for this anonymous soldier, years after his death, as a national event. Some might have seen this as a politician snatching an opportunity to attain public support, as this was a national event. The context is vastly different from that of Lincoln's and Goldman's. Ironically, it was the only speech that occurred outside wartime, and yet devoted the most attention to the subject. It also occurs decades after each speech, as the changing values and attitudes reflect the changing society.

The speech draws an interesting comparison to Lincoln's Gettysburg Address, as Keating uses emotive language to describe war as "terrible" while Lincoln described the civil war as "great". He cumulatively lists the words, "mad, brutal, awful", juxtaposing these with "Great War", criticizing the nature of war, and also how it was originally portrayed. He then adds phrases with negative connotations like "military and political incompetence" and "waste of human life" to forcefully remind the audience that this was no Great War, but and ugly, unfortunate disaster.

Following this idea, Keating changes the tone using paradox. After exploring the tragedy of war, he contrasts the loss with what we have gained from war. He speaks of what we have learnt. "It was a lesson about ordinary people and the lesson was that they were not ordinary", and what we have been given. "His tomb is a reminder of what we have lost in war and what we have gained" before going on to describe the legend, faith and understanding we have been given by his sacrifice. It is an idea much touted at Anzac Day Ceremonies, and thus is perfect for this service, and it is eloquently articulated through Keating's use of paradox. It is this appeal to patriotism that shows that this value remains important even in this modern context.

Lincoln's Gettysburg Address, Goldman's Address to the Jury and Keating's Eulogy for the Unknown Soldier all articulate the same ideas differently. Through use of techniques like erotesis, cumulative listing, and repetition the speakers addressed the values of patriotism and democracy, and their attitude to war in contrasting ways.

What makes the Jamaican culture so unique? This question is one that I've failed to answer and failed to share the answers with people while growing up in America. Because of people making fun and ridiculing me, I've been too afraid and embarrassed to share the beauty of my culture with others. I am happy to say that it is not like that anymore and I am determined to let people know about the place where I'm from. This new found pride in my culture did not come to me until recently, so I take it very seriously.

The Jamaica I know is the place where a lot of my ancestors were from. It was my home for six years of my life and I wouldn't change that for anything. This country is not all about beaches and having a good time. I've seen people go through the hardest times in their lives, but the spirit of the people continues to be "irie," which means everything is all right. This is a motto that Jamaicans live by even when they might not have all the things they need or want, but "we appreciate everything." (Kevin. Personal interview. 3 Dec. 2002)

I know that Jamaican parents are by nature very strict. Growing up in my household is a great proof of this. On a school night my brother and I were unable to watch television or go out, because what we had to do for school was the most important thing in my mom's eye. She also expected us to do our chores such as, making our beds, washing the dishes, and sometimes cook. This type of behavior is normal for the typical Jamaican household.

I also know that Jamaica has some of the best food around the world. The food is known to be very spicy and well seasoned. A lot of people that I ask in America about what's the first thought that comes to their minds when they're asked to think of a Jamaican dish, usually say Jerk chicken, but I know there's a lot more different and delicious foods than that. I grew up eating a Jamaican meal every night, even when I moved to Milwaukee.

Although I knew all of these things about my culture before doing my I-search, there's still a lot more that I don't know and would like to find out to know exactly why our culture is so unique. I hope to discover what makes me a "black" person even though I am Jamaican. Does being "black" just mean being an African American or am I still a "black" woman even though I am not African American? I would also like to know if all Jamaicans are just black people from African ancestry.

Being "black" is not just a color it's a culture. Our culture differs in some ways depending on where you are, but is very similar because of our descendants. Slavery was an important thing in Jamaica for the plantation owners. Slaves were brought from Africa to Jamaica to work. The British, French and the Dutch quickly followed suit, making a transnational industry out of the African slave trade and the super profits that it generated. "The Maroons -independent Africans who thrived in Jamaica after the Spanish left Jamaica and before England seized control in 1655- gained self-rule from the British colonialists in 1738 after a protracted guerrilla war. Queen Mother Nanny (Jamaica's only National Heroine) is the best known Maroon leader, along with Accompong and Cudjoe." (A Brief History of Jamaica)

This is the reason why I am a black person. My ancestors were African people just like the African-American's, the black French's, and all black's ancestors. "The rich origin of African descent and the struggle our forefathers endured to get here, " (Thompson, Keron . Personal interview. 2 Dec. 2002) is the uniqueness of the culture of black Jamaicans as well as all blacks. The only difference is the title that's given to us. I don't call myself African- Jamaican, but the title African-American is given to the blacks in America. We are black people with similar histories.

Jamaica is a small island with a lot of different types of people. The island consists of Africans, Afro-Europeans, East Indians and Afro- East Indians, whites, Chinese, and Afro-Chinese, and others, which means there are a lot of different influences and religions. Religions include Protestant, Church of God, Baptist, Anglican, Seventh-day Adventist, Pentecostal, Methodist, United Church, Roman Catholic, and other including some spiritual cults, which was developed in 1982.

The official language of Jamaican people is English. English is spoken and understood by all Jamaicans. Patois is a derivative of African, French and the Spanish languages, "This is a very unique aspect of the Jamaican culture," and language. The majority of the people speak patois. (Wilson, Amoy. All that I've learned from doing this search is what I want to share with all people, but more specifically black Americans. Throughout my childhood and adulthood I've encountered more black Americans being ignorant about my culture and who I am because I was born in Jamaica than anyone else. For this reason my choice of audience is black Americans. There are many different types of genres that I chose to include in my project. Poetry, art, music, teachings of patios, interviews with Jamaicans, and stories are some of the genres I decided to include in this project.

I specifically chose art and poetry, because the creative and artistic abilities of Jamaican people is a beautiful part of the way we express of our culture and ourselves and that needs to displayed for people to get a better understanding of where we are coming from. This poem is one that best describes what I am talking about.

The Jamaica I see...

The Jamaica I see has so many memories
A land of beautiful trees and greenery
I remember the sweet juicy mangos
that when you eat them you dance the tango
The naseberries and guineps, in abundance
as far as you can reach, unless you have vertigo
Cherries, etioti apples, guavas and casava
The fruits of the island with real flavour
Fetes, carnivals, garden parties and sports day
These festivities are all part of our culture
Preserved to enhance our future
Art is a way of life, and the rastaman who avoids strife
Reggae music and Sunsplash, one experience and you'll be coming back
Beautiful women with minds as sharp as a tack
striving to be different, never part of a pack
My Jamaica is not faraway
I recall my thoughts and visit everyday.

I chose the teachings of patois, because I think this is a very good thing for people to see. To show them that the language is English, but with a different flavor. It's what I spoke for 10 years of my life. As I got older my accent diminished, however it is still a part of me and I will always understand when a Jamaican says to me, "A fe me cyar" Translation: "It's my car."

Stories are a big part of the Jamaican culture. My friends and I told each other stories just for fun when we got together. My mother would read a story to us every night when we were kids. I loved every moment of it, because the stories she read were my favorite Anansi stories like this one.

Anansi and the Squirrel

Once there was a squirrel that was the smartest in the village. The squirrel walked by a corner and saw a spider named Anansi. Then Anansi asked the squirrel to get him some water.

The squirrel said, "Why should I?"
Anansi said, "I will get you a great dinner."
The squirrel made a deal with Anansi. So the squirrel set of and walked to the stream. Then he gave the water to Anansi.
Anansi said, "Thank you," with a grin on his face. That night squirrel waited at his door for Anansi. He wondered. So the squirrel went to Anansi's house.
Anansi was singing, "I have a slave. He can do my chores ha! ha! ha! I can sit on my web all day ha! ha! ha!"
The squirrel said, "I've been tricked!" I got an idea!
The next day the squirrel walked by the spider's web.
Anansi said, "Can you please give me some water? I will give you a bag of gold."
So the squirrel walked out the gate and climbed up a tree and watched Anansi.
Anansi got very mad and walked out the gate. In the morning squirrel made a fake bird out of leaves and scared Anansi away. Anansi never came back to the village.
Jamaican folklore is a tradition among the adults and the children and stories like this one is very popular wherever you go on the island.

I love Jamaican food, music, stories, people, and language. I have a beautiful culture that's different from other cultures, not necessarily better, but very unique. It's a great and very evident part of my personality that I can not hide. I cherish it and will always represent it.

I am analysing is a martial arts film called 'Jackie Chan's First Strike' starring Jackie Chan who plays himself. The plot of this film involves Chan who is a Hong Kong police officer who contracted by the CIA and Russian intelligence organisation to reclaim a stolen nuclear warhead, which is held by a rogue CIA agent. But is then framed for a murder he didn't committed and is forced to go on the run to clear his name and to complete his mission.

The sequence I have chosen to analyse is when Chan sneaks into an old theatre to plead to the family of the murder person of his innocence and the situation turns hostile.

The denotation of the chosen sequence in 'Jackie Chan's First Strike'

- Police car drives to the old theatre to drop of the family and a person is in a black car is observing
- Chan is also watching from a roof and sneaks into the theatre
- Chan pleads to the family and the family turns hostile and fight
- Once Chan sees he can't win he sits down

The sequence starts off with an establishing shot of the theatre; this is done to introduce the audience to the next scene of the film. This shot lasts for a couple for a seconds and then there is a panning shot following a police car showing the presence of police around the area, who are after Chan. The camera then stops to show a medium close up of a person, showing the back of his head in a black car. This also shows the presence of CIA agents who are also after Chan and presents CIA agents as secretive. Then there is a low angle shot of Chan on a rooftop looking over the family of the murdered person. This camera shot portrays Chan as a strong person and the fact that he is on higher ground (a roof) emphasises he's strength. Chan is then seen sliding down the building using a tree; the camera uses a tracking movement on Chan from high angle camera shot to a medium long shot. This scene just suggests he is trying to sneak in the old theatre.

When Chan walks into the old theatre, the audience sees a point of view shot of him looking at the theatre sign and Chan walking towards the family. In this shot, there is a hand-held camera movement to show that Chan feels wary about confronting the family. When one member of the family recognises there is a close up of her distressed face. Throughout the conversation there are close ups switching from the one family member and Chan, this is done to see the facial expression of the characters and to create tension. Once the family turns hostile and the fighting sequence starts there is quick editing and also the film is speeded up to emphasis action. There are also zip pan camera movements following Chan and the objects he uses as weapons (mop, stick, ladder etc.) this also gives of the impression that to film is action packed. During the fighting sequence, Chan jumps for a ledge on a higher level of the theatre. Here there is a high angle camera shot of he hanging on the ledge, this makes Chan look vulnerable and in danger. At the end of the sequence, there is a medium close up on Chan' face to show that he this is a losing battle and seems to give up. The whole fighting sequence is speeded up emphases the action taking place.

The background music at the beginning of the sequence uses drums and percussion sounds at a low tempo, this creates tension for the events to come. When the fighting sequence begins the tempo of the background music increases also the volume of the music. This is done to make the sequence seem more dramatic and provokes the audience to watch the sequence.

The sound effects of the sequence are mostly used in the fighting sequence, the punching sounds and the contact in made is exaggerated. This makes the sequence more dramatic. Also the exaggerated breathing makes the sequence more dramatic. The dialogue of this sequence is short and straight to the point like the film in general. The dialogue in this film doesn't play an important role in action films only the fighting sequences; the dialogue is used to continue the film's plot.

Jackie Chan's Character in 'Jackie Chan's First Strike' doesn't follow the stereotypical character codes of an action hero, although he does follow some of the character codes of an action hero. There are a variety of different areas, which show that Jackie Chan is not the typical action hero.

Chan is cautious, honourable and only uses violence whenever necessary but complies with the stereotypical action hero by being cool-headed.

Chan wears a yellow and black skiing gear, the clothing wore here is bright and is unordinary to wear at this in Australia. The clothes Chan wears in this sequence suggests Chan is a vibrant person and a bit of a miss fit.

Chan's movement in this film is cautious and anxious. This shows Chan to be a reasonable person. Chan's movement differs from stereotypical character codes of an action hero because typical action heroes' movement promotes them to be strong and fearless unlike like Chan.

Chan's tone of voice is moderate; by Chan holding his hands up in peace towards the family shows this. Chan's tone of voice challenges the stereotypical character codes of an Action hero because most action heroes have deep, strong voices which emphasises their strength as a hero, Chan does the opposite.

The technical codes and the character codes in any film determine the representational codes of the film. From the technical codes and the character codes I can comprehend certain character codes form the film:

- Chan is the protagonist, framed for murder
- The plot involves the police and CIA
- It is a martial arts action film
- Involves a conflict between Police/CIA and chan

I think that homosexual couples should be able to get married and have the state recognize it. Why should only Vermont legalize this? Is this fair to the homosexual people of the United States? What makes a heterosexual couple different from a homosexual couple?

Marriage is about showing how much love you have for another person and how committed you are to that person. So why shouldn't it be ok for two guys or two girls to show yes we are in love and we will be together forever? Think about this how much courage it takes for any gay couple to say I want to take the next step in our life together and have people know we are together for life. Why shouldn't they be able to do this? I was reading about the first gay marriage took place on October 1,1989. These two guys had been together for forty years before they had gotten married, they are also still together. So, I guess that's not good enough for people right? Have you ever heard of a couple before this being together for forty years before marriage? Even so why aren't they married?

When a homosexual "comes out" it is very hard for that individual. Many thoughts that could come true go threw their head. Like they could be killed, beaten, disowned by their parents, loose friends, and if some of this builds the person could end up committing suicide.

What is the difference between a same sex marriage and heterosexual marriage, besides the obvious? Homosexual couples can adopt children and if you ask some people they will tell you that the child most likely will not be gay and that the child has two great parents. I have not heard any good excuse why homosexual marriages aren't noticed by the state. I have never heard anything bad about homosexual couples that are married in Vermont. So why can this be so bad? I admit and homosexual couples will admit that they do have problems in marriage just like heterosexual marriages. So why is it not ok for homosexual couples to have the rights like heterosexual couples?

I truly think it is alright for gay marriages, they deserve the rights like everyone else. It is complete stupidity and hatred is why homosexual marriages aren't happening. This is like people with white skin hating people with black skin! SO WHY IS IT THIS WAY?
