Autism is something that affects many people all around the world. To be exact epidemiological studies estimate that it affects 2 to 5 out of 10,000 people It is characterized in many ways. This includes Impairment in social interaction, a notable impairment in communication, and restrictive, repetitive patterns of behavior. All these traits are embodied by Raymond Babbit from the movie Rainman. In this movie Raymond in an adult with autism who has lived his entire life in a hospital where his father placed him at a young age. He is discovered by his brother, who had no idea he existed, after the death of their father.
The first visible impairment in an autistic individual is the impairment of social interactions. One criteria for this feature of the disease is a failure to seek enjoyment, interests or achievements and share them with other people. This is something any normal person does. Raymond Babbit demonstrates this when he wins 86 thousand in a casino. He does not understand or share they joy his brother feels. To him it is nothing special. Raymond does recognize his gift for mathematics and numbers and does not seem to want to share this with others as a accomplishment. Another criteria is the failure to develop normal relationships with others. Raymond spends a lot of time and goes through much with his brother but he does not seem to be particularly attached to him at the end of the story. When they are saying goodbye Raymond shows no sign of being upset or in distress.

An autistic person in today’s world is a very difficult thing. They lead a solitary life because they cannot communicate with others or form friendships. They will always depend on others to take care of them and never be allowed to have a normal life with normal relationships. Raymond Babbit does have a very different and to many a sad life but he is still has his strengths. He has his skill with numbers as well as a lovable side that draws people to him because his innocence shines through his disease. Even though he has this disease he is still able to communicate and do many everyday activities.
