Perception Research Paper

Perception Research Paper

In order to truly comprehend the claim that "In order to find out how things really are, one must understand the filters through which one perceives the world," one could consider the quote, "[when] The rubber tree won't yield latex: the biologist blames the sapling, the geologist blames the soil, the contractor blames the unskilled laborer and owner says it is fighting back at being controlled," by Amitav Ghosh. This quote accurately portrays the differences in the way people view the world. In the quote Ghosh talks about how four different people will look at the same thing, yet see it in four different ways. Because of the fact that different ways and areas of knowledge affect the choices we make, we often make choices by actually comparing between the areas and ways of knowing.
__________________________________________________________

__________________________________________________________

The most common areas of knowledge that people most commonly use are ethics and history, both ancient and recent, authority and science. People tend to look at things from as scientific view and then compare their view with one of ethical perspective. When making decisions it is seemingly built into the subconscious of every human to use logic, past memory and personal experience when formulating a decision. These ways of knowing shape the decisions and the views that people have.

When we make a decision we think logically about something and try to make sense of things in our minds. When we try and make sense of thing in our minds we subconsciously base our logic on past and personal experiences that we have had. Take for example the quote by Ghosh. When the contractor looked at the rubber tree and saw that it did not produce and latex he began to think logically about the situation. He thought back to past experiences where something did not work right because one of the workers did something wrong. To the contractor this would provide a logical explanation for why the rubber tree failed and in the light of this he made his decision. He incorporated past experiences and memories into a logical explanation of the reason for the rubber trees failure.

This very same method of reasoning took place in the minds of those who made decisions concerning the September 11th attack. People began to try and construct logical explanations based on their past experiences. They began to reason that since, in the past, the Al Queda organization had organized movements against governments and since they were an unethical group and so on, the Al Queda must have organized the attack on the WTC and the Pentagon. This fit in logically because of several factors including the fact that some of the suspects were confirmed to be "Аsleepers" sent to the US to await a time when they would be called to action (Sept. 11 News). People also use this method of thinking and viewing the world even in the smallest decisions and thoughts made.

Historians are constantly faced with the issue of seeing through the "filters" that people view the world through. Historians have the hard task of looking at many different points of view in order to try and somewhat accurately recreate history. Historians have long realized that people view things differently based on their different ethical standpoints, past experiences, and the history of their time. Their task is to try and see through the filter to see things as they really where (Writing History). Take for example the history of the military action at My Lai. The Americans and Vietnamese both had different tales of what happened at My Lai (Something Dark). Now historians face the difficult task of trying to clear away the screens people viewed the whole operation through and reconstruct what actually happened.

The Sixth Sense Term Paper

The Sixth Sense Movie Essay

The movie "The Sixth Sense" tells a story of a very special child. Cole is a young boy who lives with his mother. At the beginning of the film it presents Coles unknown gift as a curse but there are a number of scenes that later convince you he has a special gift. Cole is not like the other kids in the playground. Cole has a fear, a fear that he wants to keep secret from everyone, even his mother. Not only does the movie have a twist but also has certain scenes that will keep u interested. This movie can be classified as horror and thriller. Thriller because it has a twist and horror because of the performance by Cole.

The movie isn't really focused on being a scary movie; it is trying more to be a very serious and dramatic film. In comparison to a scary movie like "The Ring" it is more about the story and the twists involved. But there were certain parts in the movie that were scary.
__________________________________________________________

__________________________________________________________

The characters in the movie all have their own way of contributing to the action, suspense and twists in the movie. Of all the characters Cole (played by Haley Joel Osment) stands out. The way he keeps his gift a secret makes him a kind of creepy character. Throughout the film it shows life through Cole's eyes. This gives us an insight of Cole's feelings and emotions. The sort of things that he has to endure, seeing ghosts during the day and night. Never ending terror.

Malcolm (played by Bruce Willis) on the other hand is the twist in the movie. At certain parts of the movie there are signs that may not appear to be important but later help you to understand why these things actually occurred. There were a number of times that this happened. The restaurant scene, the cupboard under the stairs, the doorbell, the meeting between Lyn and Malcolm. These things all become clear towards the end of the movie and contribute in a way that makes the movie more satisfying. When you realize that Malcolm is actually dead, you think about all the things that involved him and why they happened they way they did. This makes the movie much more interesting.

The third most important character in the film, Lyn Seer. She plays the distressed mother very well. She is seen as the mother who is trying to communicate with her son. In one of the scenes this is actually the main topic. It was said that if their family didn't communicate the family would fall apart. This is one of the most important parts in the movie because it shows that Cole has to make a decision. To be truthful and tell his mother about his unique gift or he could keep it a secret and see their family break down. There were also many other important scenes involving her. A scary scene was when she was looking at pictures of Cole and saw a bright light hovering close to him. In the movie it didn't really explain what the meaning of this was but it kind of convinced her and the audience that there was really something happening to Cole.

In this film there were some good points and some bad points. The good points were that it had a very interesting twist, the final conclusion on the film was that it ended the film leaving you feeling happy that Malcolm has finally done what he has gone out to do, to help a troubled child. It made you feel happy because Malcolm has completed his job and finally moved on to a happier place. A bad point was that at the start of the film suspense was building and building, but then as soon as you see the ghosts and you become frightened for a brief moment all the scariness of the movie diminishes.

Overall the movie was very well done. It had all the things it needed to be a successful horror/thriller movie. It had a twist that made you think and ponder, and it also had Cole, the troubled child. His performance was the backbone of the movie. 8.5 / 10

Oedipus Essay

Oedipus Essay Example

Our group's question is "Is Sophocles" Oedipus the King a cathartic play, as defined by Aristotle? Why or why not?

According to Aristotle, "the purpose of tragedy was to work a cathartic, or purging, effect on the audience, to "arouse pity and terror" so that these negative emotions could be drained from the soul. The tragic heroes were warnings, not models; the spectators were instructed to seek modest lives and not aim too high" (M&P, 63-64).
__________________________________________________________

__________________________________________________________

I believe the play Oedipus the King does in fact meet the criteria of a cathartic as defined by Aristotle.

The play's "two themes: the relation between humans and gods and the hero's moral dilemmas" (R1, 56) evoke one to arouse one's pity and terror for the hero and the gods. More specifically, pity for the human attempting to act morally; and fear from the gods as they destroy Oedipus (the king). The result of Oedipus realizing "that humans, even kings, are fated to suffer"(R1, 57), makes the audience realize the same. This play could act as a warning, as suggested by Aristotle, that even though a person acts morally they may still be destroyed.

With all this being kept in mind, Oedipus the King surely measures up as a cathartic play.

I believe that Oedipus the King is a cathartic play for the following reasons. Aristotle defined a cathartic play as making the audience feel pity and terror, in order to drain it from their soul. Oedipus the King certainly does this.

Yes, I believe Oedipus the King to be a cathartic play. Cathartic plays have the effect of pity and terror so the negative emotions could be drained from the soul. Oedipus the King does this.

Allen Ginsberg Research Paper

Allen Ginsberg Research Paper

The often explicit and always vivid writings of Allen Ginsberg seemed to stem from his own life. Allen's childhood in the city, political issues of the times, and the trials of understanding the vast psychology of human beings often emerged. His mother, Naomi Ginsberg, frequently tended to appear as topic or subject matter in Allen's work as well. His writing would describe her life, her beliefs, and her mental misfortune, how they affected him, and how his own experiences compared. The course vocabulary and graphic descriptions Allen used would emulate the harsh reality of the time in which he lived. Ginsberg recreated his life, his family, his urban upbringing, and the way his world unfolded in his poetry.
__________________________________________________________

__________________________________________________________

Son to Communist Russian immigrants, Allen Ginsberg grew up in urban Newark and Manhattan, and his writings reflected such an up bringing. In his poem "America" Allen expressed his thoughts and retrospectively looked at his life, "America I used to be communist when I was a kid I am not sorry." Ginsberg often used his urban environment as settings in his work, "Who coughed on the sixth floor of Harlem crowned with flame under the tubercular sky," he depicted in his poem "Howl.""Moloch whose smokestacks and antennae crown the cities," he continued. With picturesque narrations and metropolitan situations in "Mugging," Ginsberg wrote, "Along E. 10th's glass splattered pavement, kid blacks & Spanish oiled hair adolescents crowded house fronts." Ginsberg used these urban settings in his writings, introspective to the life he led and the times he grew up during.

"Go fuck yourself with your atom bomb," Ginsberg exploded in "America" at the actions of the government of his time. Allen wrote, in dissatisfaction, of politics during the 1940s and 1950s. "Who burned cigarette holes in their arms protesting the narcotic tobacco haze of Capitalism," he wrote in "Howl." Later in his life he wrote a poem titled, "Anti-Vietnam War Peace Mobilization," in which he expressed anti-war protest, "Assembled before White House filled with mustached Germans & police buttons." Allen appeared to have issues with political events and government actions taken during his life, as he wrote of Nixon and Roosevelt, Hitler and Communism.

One of the most visible aspects in his writing is the presence of his mother. "Kaddish" was for Naomi. It captured her as Allen grew up seeing her, images of her coming to America, and slowly descending into madness. "Where you walked 50 years ago, little girl from Russia, eating the first poisonous tomatoes of America frightened on the dock," Allen spoke of life when his mother first immigrated to New York. He wrote of the sad and demanding times while she was in and out of mental institutions, "Don't be afraid of me because I'm just coming home from a mental hospital "I'm your mother." He captured something endearing even as his mother struggled, "Once locked herself in with razor or iodine" could hear her cough in tears at sink." Allen also used extremely vivid imagery to tell of Naomi's horrible condition, "Convulsions and red vomit coming out of her mouth diarrhea water exploding from her behind." His writing painted very understandable pictures of his mother and portrayed his and her life, suffering through those times.

Allen Ginsberg's life seemed to be the muse for his creativity. He wrote of his mother and family, of being mugged, and of events that happened in the world around him. The urban settings in his writing reflected his own settings for the duration of his life, living in Newark, Manhattan, and San Francisco. Ginsberg's work held nothing back, was real, and painted life as it often is, ugly and imperfect. Allen's writing was his life.

Term Paper on Goodfellas and Donnie Brasco

Essay on Goodfellas vs Donnie Brasco

Good Fellas (realist film) by Martin Scorsese and Donnie Brasco (realist film) by Mike Newell are two films based on actual events and people that existed. Both are stereotypical Italian gangster films and I intend to compare and contrast these two films, which differ in narrative style, tone, and acting. In turn, each of these aspects creates two distinct films and evokes two separate moods in each movie.

Martin Scorsese's film Goodfellas details the rise and 'fall' of character Henry Hills' life within the Italian mob (1950's throughout the late 1970's). This story is told from the main character, Henry Hill's perspective. The path of the young Hill is outlined from his formative years through adulthood.
__________________________________________________________

__________________________________________________________

Scorsese makes great use of voice-overs to guide the audience through the story and help the audience gain depth past what is being shown on film. Scorsese switches voiceovers between Henry and his wife, Karen. Voice overs invades the characters' personal thoughts and ideas while learning their thought pattern to understand why the character says or does certain things. In addition, voice-overs allow the audience to feel comfortable with the characters.

"As far back as I can remember, I always wanted to be a gangster." Scorsese utilizes flashbacks to help tell the story. The opening scene begins with "The Goodfellas" driving on a dark highway in a car. Immediately after this scene, the audience is taken through a series of flash backs from Hills' childhood, coming of age in the mob, and then story switches to the present. All of the flashbacks the colors were faded to represent the past.

Martin Scorsese brilliantly uses freeze frames as "snapshots" as transition from one scene to the next. What I found interesting was the fact that each snap shot were memories of great times shared at: children's' birthday parties, baby showers, births, weddings, and vacations shared by Hill and his family. At times, Scorsece uses a grainy texture as though it was shot using a video camera. This effect attaches the audience to the story, because you are sharing the some of the most intimate moments with a close knit family.

The tone of the movie contributes to the audience's perception of Goodfella's Henry Hill, Jimmy Tommy. Powerful men, parties, huge rolls of money, expensive cars and suits, music, witty remarks and plenty of dinner scenes contributed to the comedic tone of the movie. Constantly flashing of materialistic items makes "mob life" appear very attractive. The beginning of the movie celebrated good times, glamour, and violence.

Frequent dinner scenes took the edge off the Goodfellas' violent lifestyle, and bought the audience into their homes. One of the most memorable dinner scenes was when the Goodfellas beat a man to a bloody pulp and stored him the trunk and when to Tommy's mothers house to have dinner. After dinner, Tommy borrows his mother's kitchen knife. The Goodfellas leave the house to complete the murder.

The tone of film shifts after Hill is released from jail, and starts to sell and use drugs and an intense confrontation (with a knife) from his wife about his ongoing affair. This signifies the reality and the consequence of one's actions. Henry Hill's (and the Goodfellas) downfall.

Goodfellas: Henry Hill (Ray Liotta), Jimmy (Robert DeNiro), Tommy (Joe Pesci) are well suited for their roles. They were extremely convincing. Henry Hill was wore many hats. He was a loving husband, caring boyfriend, father, and gangster yet he had a deep dark violent side that reared its ugly head when he became angry. He was always on the edge. His downfall occurred once he started to sell and use drugs.

Tommy was an energetic, colorful character driven by pride and ego. Or one could easily label him as psychotic. The audience could never tell when he was going to take a situation too far. He shot a bartender in the foot and eventually killed a bartender for serving his drinks too slow. Tommy killed a "made" man because he mentioned Tommy's former profession (shoe shiner).

His downfall occurred after he killed the "made" man. Jimmy (Roberto DeNiro) was the reserved quiet, controlled type. He wasn't as neurotic as Henry or psychotic as Tommy. Everything was well thought and planned out. He was very level headed and enjoyed danger. His personality flaw was that he was paranoid. After the Goodfellas got away with the biggest heist in history, Jimmy became extremely paranoid and killed of the immediate members of his "family."

Each of these actors played their roles to the best of their ability. Their mannerisms and slang ("made": becoming a boss, whacked: murdered) that they used was very realistic.

Mike Newell's Donnie Brasco is also based on a true story. The story takes place in the late 1970's. Narrated from the point of view, of agent Joe Pistone alias Donnie Brasco, and typewriter documenting the progress of Donnie Brasco creates feelings of detachment towards the characters. This film documents the strategic plan Joe Pistone took in order to be taken in by well-known gangster Lefty (alias Lefty Guns) in hopes of becoming a "wise guy. He assumes the name Donnie Brasco and begins life in the mob. Brasco's wife wasn't pleased with her husband being an absentee father. He was getting too involved in the case. After the officials got the information to destroy the mob, Brasco was taken off of the case and his identity was revealed to the mob. In fear of being ratted out, double crossed and humiliated, Lefty was "sent for" (murdered) because he "vouched" for the wrong guy (an undercover cop).

The atmosphere of this film was very somber and drab- almost depressing. Photography was used to spy on the characters, but the photos were taken with black and white film. The photos were also taken from a distance adding to the detachment of the characters. Throughout the movie, time is expressed as progress and documented by a typewriter. The photos taken and typed documents eventually build a file of evidence against the mob.

I believe that helps the audience to understand the severity of the movie and eventually leading to the death of Lefty Guns. Lefty wasn't as rich like the gangsters in Goodfellas. He was borderline bankrupt " Just a spoke on a wheel". He was frustrated and depressed because he had a sun that was a junkie, and he didn't get "upped" (promoted) after all of the hard work that he has put into the organization.

There were few dinner scenes in Donnie Brasco and the most memorable one was during Christmas. Lefty, dressed in a sweatsuit, invited Donnie Brasco to stay for dinner. The only ones at the table were Lefty and Brasco and the dinner conversation was kept to a minimum, not to mention solemn. This was indicative of the entire movie! Lighter moments of the film were diplayed as actors when Al Pacino (Lefty) was being a good "father figure" while teaching Donnie Brasco the necessary survival skills and proper etiquette of mobsters. He uses word like Fogazie (fake), "stand up guy," and shows his humorous side when he explains the many meanings of "fageda'bout it" (forget about it) friend of mine and a friend of ours. He also instructs Brasco how to dress (no jeans) and present himself (shave the mustache) Johnny Dep (Joe Pistone alias Donnie Brasco): plays a "do good cop who gets in too deep.

Unfortunately, after Brasco befriends Lefty, he gains compassion, tries, and fails to save Lefty from getting whacked (murdered).

In short, both movies show the strong traditions of Italian American families and the hierarchy in the mob. Although Good Fellas and Donnie Brasco are both realist films, Goodfellas lives up to the glamour and glitz of a "gangsters' life, while Donnie does not. Goodfellas used flashbacks to give us the history and a greater understanding the cause and effect. Goodfellas was an exciting action packed movie filled with suspense. This was made possible by the upbeat and colorful cast, in addition to the numerous party scenes and comedic dialogue between characters. I really enjoyed the funny voice-overs because they were personal with access to the characters private thoughts. My favorite character was Tommy, the funniest of the Goodfellas, because he was so unpredictable. After all, of the crime family was arrested, and Hill was placed in the witness protection his sense of humor remained, " That's the hardest part, Today everything is different. There is no action. I have to wait around for the paper like everyone else. Can't even get decent food. Right after I got here I ordered some spaghetti with marinara sauce and I got egg noodles and ketchup. I am the average nobody. I get to live my life like a schnook."

On the other hand, Donnie Brasco did not use flashbacks, and dark colors. I disliked the narration and the tone of Donnie Brasco because it didn't glamorize the materialistic aspects, making the movie enjoyable and fun to watch. I have learned that narration and tone can help or hurt a movie. I had a hard time paying attention to Donnie Brasco because of the lack of color and somewhat boring style of executing the plot.

Psycho Essay

Psycho Movie Analysis Essay

The film Psycho opened the world's eyes to horror films and it did this in a very successful way. This was achieved by director Alfred Hitchcock who used sound design as a key element in the film. Music for the film was composed by Bernard Herrmann with the use of only string instruments that became the sound motif of the film.
__________________________________________________________

__________________________________________________________

This was how Hitchcock created a connection and suspense with the viewer, through music. Only at key moments in Psycho was music utilized to create drama and have continual build up through the film. To add to this the music would start slowly and as the scene intensifies, the music would speed up. This allowed the viewer to feel the emotions and tension of the character through the music. As well in some scenes the voice of Marianne thinking in her head would be heard.

This adds the characters confusion and scattered thoughts to the building tension. By having key music in Psycho, Hitchcock is forcing the viewer's adrenaline to start pumping every time they hear that certain sound. To add to this Hitchcock uses amazing camera angles to intensify his effects. These elements are combined to build the viewer up for the brutal murder scene. The intense shrieking of the strings heightens the tension of the murder causing the viewers adrenaline to rush. As well the editing with forty-five different shots of the murder in thirty seconds creates drama in the scene, which corresponded perfectly with the music. This displays the dedication to detail that Hitchcock had and how he believed in high quality production. This film went on to be one of the most famous horror movies which was easily recognized for its motif. This shows the power that sound and music can have in film when used skillfully.

Research Paper on Indian Culture

Research Paper on Indian Culture

Old is gold so is Indian civilization. India is an ever demanding destination for people for centuries, because it is so diverse and yet one. India represents a kaleidoscope of color and festivals, perfumes and aromas, cuisine and costume. Very few countries worldwide have such a diverse and ancient culture as India has. Stretching back in an unbroken sweep over 5000 years, Indian culture has been enriched by successive waves of migration that were absorbed into the Indian way of life. Modern India presents a picture of unity in diversity to which history provides no parallel.

America on the other hand is one of the richest and most resourceful nations on our planet. Americans yearn for success and the constant prosperity of their society. This characteristic makes them the most unique and most powerful nation in the world. America has given her people the mean to live a quality life and protected them with constitutional laws that are the envy of other nations. It is this way of life that I would like to experience and learn from. The very thought of combining the American way of life and believes with some of the Indian customs and culture, makes me confident that one could improve ones life and society alike.
__________________________________________________________

__________________________________________________________

India's culture can be of great value to America, which itself is rich in diversity. American culture is considered extremely tolerant. Americans are always keen to learn about others cultures and the greatness lies in the fact that, they respect all the cultures, and treat other cultures with great understanding. American society sees other people as individuals like themselves. They treat ideas, manners and customs with respect that deepens their capacity to appreciate another's culture. After all being civil- courteous, considerate and polite, open doors for dialogue and discovery, thus America is truly considered a country that is home to many who are far away from home. The greatness of this country is to appreciate other culture and to learn from them.

Knowledge is of great importance, and education definitely plays a great role in ones success. Where most of the young American kids drop out of High School, Indians are known to at least pursue a bachelors degree. Thus one important thing being an Indian I can promote in America is the value of education. Another important aspect of human life is the family value. Most Americans leave their houses when they are teenagers, parents also seems to prefer this way of life, but because there is no elderly person to guide these teenagers, most of them take a wrong path and opt for drugs, booze, smoking etc. In India all the family members are closely woven, and ones decision effects the others, therefore kids always seeks parents advice before taking any steps, and thus there is less room for error, and less chances of kids choosing a wrong path. In America most of the marriages end up in divorce, and thus just a single parent raises a kid. A broken home and broken relationship between mother and father can create a bitter feeling in a child, and thus he/she might never know the true meaning of family and marriage. Such kid when become teenagers are often seen as bullying other kids, and high in temperament, small argument can lead to a street fight or some kind of chaos. Indian yoga and different form of Indian meditation can be a best way to ease a soul like that, which is full of hatred. Indian yoga has already become very popular in many parts of the world, and many Americans practice it everyday to gain inner peace. The channel of thought and culture of India is "higher realization of life", not materialistic fascination but "spiritual quest".

Having said that, I believe that by having the opportunity to live in America, I would be able to learn a lot about America's Societies, its people, and their way of life. In the process, perhaps I could be fortunate enough to teach a thing or two about my customs and believes to my American friends. In the end I would just like to say that it is great to learn from other cultures and respect them, but in that process one should not forget their own roots and culture.
