The Crucible Research Paper

The Crucible Term Paper

"The Crucible" is a play describing how lies and betrayals destroy a peaceful society. It also shows how jealousy and hatred destroy lives when accusers are given too much trust and victims are given none. Throughout the play, the ultimate causes of all the problems are betrayals and lies.

In "The Crucible", John's disloyalty to Elizabeth is what starts the accusations and ultimately his and his wife's deaths. When John is caught by his wife while having an affair with Abigail Williams, their servant, tensions rise between the two. As a result, Elizabeth furious and disappointed throws Abigail out. This makes her most jealous, and she asks her uncle's slave, Tituba from Barbados, to do one of her rituals and kill Goody Proctor. They decide to go to the woods and do the ritual and Abigail forces some other girls to go with them also. While making a soup and doing a dance, Reverend Parris, Abigail's uncle walks in on them. This sparks a commotion in Salem that begins a witch hunt. The girls, trying to protect themselves, follow Abigail's instructions and start pretending as if they were attacked by other people's spirits; people whom they claim have contracted with the Lucifer. A trial is formed and many others also are executed.
__________________________________________________________

__________________________________________________________

And again Abigail tries to get rid of Elizabeth, accusing her by saying that she has compromised with the devil and had sent her spirit out one night and stabbed her in the stomach, but when John tries to protect his wife by telling the court that she slept with him and she is accusing Elizabeth out of jealousy, everything falls apart. When the judge asks Elizabeth to tell the court if such a thing really happened, she lies to protect John's reputation unknowingly. Then Abigail and the other girls accuse John of being on the devil's side and the Judge immediately believes them and convicts John.

No one except the persons responsible was going to be harmed if it were not for the lies that were told to protect one and harm another. If from the beginning the girls had not lied and their parents had not supported them, no one would have had been punished except the girls, and since they were all teenagers the punishment was not going to be so harsh. Also, many lives would have had been saved. Many parents knowingly go with the story just to gain a profit and to also keep themselves from being accused. Lies follow lies and after a few weeks passes by anyone who ever thought of telling the truth is now too deep into it to even think about it again. After a while the situation gets so bad that when Elizabeth lies to protect her husband's reputation she ends up making things even worst, causing John to be accused of working with the devil also, which ultimately caused them both their lives.

In "The Crucible", Arthur Miller describes how disloyalty rips a family to pieces and how a society is shredded to apart by lies; Lies which cost some their lives and benefited others. Lies that started as a child's play and ended up making a lesson in history, but Julius Caesar once said "Those who do not know their past, are doomed to repeat it."

The House on Mango Street Research Paper

The House on Mango Street Essay

The book tells "a story about a girl who didn't want to belong" (p. 109). It relates a young girl's little world, from whom she would escape because it suffocated her and looks very sad and unright. Nevertheless, she knows she is part of that place and she can only go away with her fancy. In fact, even if she is very young, her sensibility makes her able to understand other people troubles and to capture the bitterness of their lives. More exactly, men's taking advantage and women's disillusion are what most make she feel bad.
__________________________________________________________

__________________________________________________________

The book is written in a very informal manner, that reproduces a diary style. In fact, the sentences are usually short and the direct dialogues are reported without inverted commas. Thus, even the technique is according to a story told from a girl's point of view. Moreover, the narration is organized into brief chapters too, the majority dedicated to persons who used to live on her same street. So that, the story develops through these characters, their problems and difficulties. Properly, the writer reports how they are taken in by the protagonist's finest feelings. As a matter of fact, every section contains an atmosphere of desolation. Every characters's description is narrated with a bitter taste, even if the writer is never very explicit. Marin, for example, was "waiting for a car to stop [...], someone who change her life" (p. 27). And there is Rosa Verga, who "had so many children she didn't know what to do" (p. 29). Or Minerva, that "cries because her luck is unlucky. Every night and every day" (p.84).

Then, there are female characters imprisoned in a man's world. Like Alicia, who "is afraid of nothing except four-legged fur. And fathers" (p. 32). Or Rafaela, that fancies about women that can "open homes with keys" (p. 80). Or Sally, her friend, who sometimes wishes she hasn't to go home, to her father. So that she gets married to escape, but she finds another time imprisoned "looking at the walls [...], at the linoleum roses on the floor", symbol of a supposed happy matrimonial life (p. 102).

So that, the book is centered on man's dominance on woman, even when she talks about her personal experience. In fact, in the episode of her first job, she tells about an old man who forces her to kiss him and furthermore, she recounts when she was raped. Moreover, she describes a feeling of hate when sees a woman yielding to man's rules: "I don't know why - she writes- but something inside me wanted to throw a stick" (p. 96). All these experiences make grow into herself a feeling of anger and impotence, but more than this, she feels misunderstood. As a matter of fact, she doesn't find a place that belongs to her. The house on Mango Street "isn't her house. Even the garden "that had been such a good place to play didn't seem hers either"(p. 98), after Sally's misadventure.

The story of The House on Mango Street is not exactly centered on what only happened in this place. More exactly it tells many similar experiences and many people pieces of life. So that, the house on Mango Street is not only a house. It represents a whole world, governed by man's rules and injustices. Thus, when the protagonist thinks about the house of her dreams, that would have to be "not a man's house. Not a daddy's" (p. 108), she is wishing a world all her own, a different world. For this reason she puts on paper her experiences, so that "the ghost does not ache so much" (p. 110) and she can feel free. So that, her only freeway is to go away "for the ones who cannot out" (p. 110).

West Side Story Term Paper

West Side Story Research Paper

Widely considered as a masterpiece of the America Musical Theater the movie version of West Side Story is among the most faithful of Hollywood adaptations. Leonard Bernstein's music, Jerome Robbins choreography, the story by Arthur Laurents and Stephen Sondheim's lyrics combine to transform William Shakespeare's Romeo & Juliet into the language and temper of the streets in the '50's of New York City.

The musical, written and performed, opens with an overview of the setting, in Manhattan, and continues with a danced prologue indicating the tension between the Sharks, a gang of young Puerto Ricans, and the Jets, an American street gang. The head of the Jets, Riff swears to drive out the Sharks, lead by Bernardo, from the streets to claim a small "turf" in the West Side of Manhattan (Jet Song). Riff is determined to challenge Bernardo during the next dance, and asks his old friend and the co-founder of the Jets, Tony, to help him. Time has pulled Tony away from the gang, and makes him feel other emotions but agrees. (Something's Coming)
__________________________________________________________

__________________________________________________________

The actual drama takes place in the evening of two successive days. When during the dance the Jets and Tony surprisingly assemble with the Sharks and Maria, Bernardo's sister. Between Maria, who is promised to marry Chino, a member of the sharks, and Tony there is Love at first site (Maria).

In Shakespeare's famous Balcony scene, from Romeo and Juliet, Tony and Maria promise to love each other forever (Tonight), while accepting the situation surrounding their heritage. Later on all Puerto Rican girls state the benefits of living in America by dynamically singing and dancing (America).

While the situation escalates and the two groups decide to have a "clean" fight between their two strongest men, Tony promises Anita to prevent any sort of fighting and to meet with her afterwards. After all Tony's efforts to avoid violence between the groups, the fight escalates into a massacre. Bernado kills Riff and terror-stricken, at the sight of his best friend, Tony kills Bernardo by stabbing him with a knife. The Jet's heated about the death of their leader start singing (Cool).

Maria, still unfamiliar with the fact that Tony was not able to stop the fight, but rather turning it into a massacre, is still preparing for her rendezvous (I feel pretty). Just then Chino brings the dreadful news and swears to kill Tony. Bernardo's girlfriend Anita is outraged when she hears that Tony and Maria are dating and tries to enforce these ideas by singing (A boy like that).

Still chased by the police and the sharks Tony shows his depressed feelings towards killing Bernado and decides to visit Maria and confess the murder. Together they dream of a of a place free from hate and violence (Somewhere).

The story ends with Tony getting shot, in front of both gangs, by Chino and dying in Maria's arms. Accepting the harm that was caused over a small turf, in the West Side of Manhattan, the two groups symbolically carry Tony's remains away together and decide to hold peace.

Throughout translating the musical West Side Story to film several changes were made to suit audience sensibilities.

The change that was often discussed was the switching of "Gee, Officer Krupke" and "Cool". It appears that a joyful song such as Krupke is incompatible to the mood created by the fight, so this song, as well as the cheerful "I Feel Pretty" were both moved up to happier times before the "rumble". "Cool" was placed in the slot following the rumble.

In the musical, "America" is a light-hearted number sung by Anita and the other Porto Rican girls. In the movie version new lyrics were added to bring in the Porto Rican boys, thus this allowed them to be more active in the movie than on stage. The order of songs is also switched; on stage "Maria" and "Tonight" are consecutive, followed by "America", while in the film the production number comes between the two love songs.

As a result of the changes a new character was introduced, Ice. He was created to provide a solid descendant for Riff in the later part of the film. This character does not appear on stage.

Both Romeo and Juliet and Westside Story are centered around conflicts of young people. The adults seemed separated from the story since the needs of the youth are not sympathetic to them.

Something that differs Juliet from Maria is that she dies, while marrying Romeo, and Maria lives but does not merry Tony. In both plays the main character kills a relative of their lover. In Romeo and Juliet, Romeo kills Tybalta, Juliet's cousin. In West Side Story, Tony kills Bernardo, Maria's brother.

Together the movie version won 12 Academy awards including best picture, supporting actor and actress, best direction and even a special award for Jerome Robbins for his brilliant achievement of managing the choreography. All this really enforces the idea that this is an entertaining play to view for leisure and is one of the best translations from a musical to film.

Term Paper on Antonio Vivaldi

Research Paper on Antonio Vivaldi

Antonio Vivaldi was an Italian music composer who lived from 1678 to 1741, a period of art commonly known as the Baroque era. Vivaldi lived in Venice and taught music at an all-girls orphanage for most of his life. He was a master of the violin and often performed his own works. He is widely known as the composer of concertos, a form of music with a small orchestra and solo lead instrument. Aside from concertos, he wrote religious works and operas. After his death he was all but forgotten for 200 years until his works were discovered early in this century. He has since become one of the world's most popular baroque composers.

In the allegro piece "Autumn" it is primarily polyphonic stating a short theme or subject in the beginning in the major home key. The theme is then repeated over in deferent movements with a little twist each time. The beginning starts a fast upbeat tempo and crescendos and decrescendos throughout the piece there is a great contrast between each soloist and the orchestra as a while. The piece reminds me of a Concerto Grosso and ritornello form where all play together as in Tutti and then solos in-between each ritornello fragments. There is a lot of contrast between loud and soft sounds and between relatively large and small groups. The beat seems to follow a two-two duple meter and the rhythm varies throughout. For a few minutes solos played in very soft pianissimo dynamic then straight to a forte solo in strings. A second theme is introduced. This follows a turnery for of ABA and a then CBC.

The second piece "Canon in D Major" is a soft flowing continuous piece. The Beginning had a short prelude which in turn the main theme or subject followed in a low hey. It then crescendos the theme in a higher key played together with all the instruments. This piece is polyphonic and has a sextuple meter. This piece was introduced into a Fugue form which is based on this one main theme. Each time different melodic lines repeat the subject. This piece has a turnery form of ABA. There is a countersubject played by the violins which appears with the subject sometimes below and sometimes above it. The rhythm and beat keep constant and flowing. The song was legato and smooth. This piece I enjoyed very much.

Both of these pieces were quite different but had the same kind of flow to them. Both were very smooth and flowing with no harsh tones. Vivaldi liked to switch between loud and soft at many points in both pieces. Both pieces were polyphonic and included many instruments.

I really enjoyed this concert and these particular pieces. Vivaldi and all of his companions in the baroque period had beautiful music. Each piece was smooth, flowing and relaxing. I thoroughly enjoyed the all the music.

Term Paper on Ulysses

Term Paper on Ulysses

In the poem "Ulysses" by Alfred Lord Tennyson and the play "The Tempest" by William Shakespeare, both describe situations where men relinquish there responsibilities to pursue a life as they choose with out being constrained. Ulysses was a king and ruler of his lands, this however was not enough as he yearned for travel, "To sail beyond the sunset, and the baths of all the western stars, until I die." This was his dream, and the way in which he was choosing to live his life absent of his responsibilities. This was also the case in "The Tempest" as Prospero, was also king and ruler of his lands and relinquished his responsibilities to study and practice magic. These men were different in various ways the foremost distinction between these two men was in the time periods in which they wrote. Prospero was a character in Shakespeare's play written in the Renaissance time period, and Ulysses a Greek story written within the Victorian Age. These works demonstrates how two men both reject their responsibilities but how the Renaissance and Victorian Age look upon the same circumstances differently regarding the aspects of time, justification and morality.
__________________________________________________________

__________________________________________________________

During the Renaissance morals were highly upheld, not fulfilling one's responsibilities was unheard of. This was made evident as Prospero was banished from his own kingdom as he had turned his back on his people, choosing not to rule but to read and study. He was sent to an island for away to finish the rest of his life in solitude with no one except his daughter and some animals native to the island. However during the Victorian Age Ulysses also turned his back on his people to explore the world, however he was not banished to a far off island as this was not seen to be as devastating as it once was. Instead he was encouraged to do as he pleased leaving both his people and his faithful family behind. This displays the selfishness of both men as Prospero while ruling cared more about his own interests in magic than for the people under his rule, this lead to his banishment forcing him into exile. Ulysses was also selfish as he left his wife to rule his kingdom in his absence, and also left his son to grow up without a father. So he could enjoy himself by traveling the world and exploring far off lands.

In "The Tempest" the reader is lead to believe that Prospero is where he belongs banished to an island, believing he has committed a terrible injustice to his people. Even though his actions can be justified as his brother resumed the throne even before his absence. Prospero was slowly loosing power to his brother, by the time he came to this realization it was to late for him to regain the throne and he was banished. Even while banished on his island he had the reassurance that his kingdom was being looked after, not by the just or rightful ruler but being looked after all the same. Ulysses justification for his actions is to leave his throne to his son Telemachus, whom he believes to be a better ruler. "He works his work, I mine." Hear he explains that his own work is to travel while Telemachus's work will be to rule. He can not know for sure that Telemachus will be a just and appropriate ruler but he is willing to take the chance so he can do as he wills. This option is highly sought after for then there will be a rightful ruler to leave in place. Ulysses conscience can then be cleared justifying himself that he is doing the right thing by giving up all his responsibilities to someone who will appreciate them.

There is also a moral side to this as both men gave up there rights and responsibilities. This however can not be justified as some people are born in to privilege and with that privilege comes certain responsibilities. Every person has responsibilities to fulfill, some smaller than others but they are still there and are all equally important. This concept remains constant threw both time periods. Sometimes it is harder to do what is right, than to just follow your heart. This is where both men went wrong thinking only of themselves and not about the bigger picture. But only one of the men was punished, and in the end after his banishment he realized his mistakes and returned to rule his throne placing his people first. Ulysses however never changed his mind and still yearned for travel placing his people and his family second to his travels.

The Renaissance and the Victorian Age had many different views on the aspects of responsibility. However they both possessed a strict obedience to their moral responsibilities, the Renaissance period punished people who did not follow there responsibilities this was shown in "The Tempest". These were not the circumstances for the Victorian Age as Ulysses was not punished for his actions. Both periods had little tolerance for the two men's justifications, they were both not accepted. This displays the different reactions of people of two different time periods to the same circumstances.

The Beggar's Opera Term Paper

The Beggar's Opera Research Paper

Macheath, Peachum, and Lockit, these are just some of the players in the 1728 ballad opera called The Beggar's Opera. It was the first real English ballad opera and, by almost any measure, the most popular English theater work of the eighteenth century. Of course you can't read about the Beggar's opera, without reading about the man who created such a brilliant satire.

On September 16, 1685, during the reign of Charles II, a man by the name of John Gay was born. Although an orphan until the age of ten, his kind uncle raised and schooled Gay throughout his life. As he became older, Gay became a mercer, which he disliked very much. In 1712, Gay became the secretary to the Duchess of Monmouth. Immediately after losing a small fortune in the South Sea, Gay was appointed Lottery Commissioner, a job he held for the rest of his life. Gay never married, and divided his time among his friends, especially the Duke and Duchess of Queensberry and the members of the Scriblerians, including Swift and Pope. In 1732, Gay returned to London, where he died on December 4 and was buried in Westminster Abbey.
__________________________________________________________

__________________________________________________________

After Gay wrote "The Beggar's Opera", he made a substantial amount of money by selling the copyright to John Watts on February 6, 1728. Watts printed the music on copper plates; without words, in two separate gatherings at the end, and published the text is octavo. The public did not like the way that the music was being published and demanded the music and lyrics together on one sheet. Watts agreed to the urges of the public and published another text in a second octavo on April 9, 1728. The text of the second octavo underwent several substantive changes: The alteration of a sentence in Act 1 scene 6, the addition of have in the first line of Air 7, the continuous numbering of the Airs throughout the play, the addition of a sentence in Act 2 scene 4, and the change of weary to wary in Air 40. But what was the Beggar's Opera? What did it consist of? And what was it about?

The Beggar begins by explaining his opera to the Player; here Gay takes the opportunity through the Beggar to explain himself to the audience, and even apologizes for the informality of the piece. The Beggar and the Player are hurried as Act 1 begins. The Setting is in Peachum's house, where he is going over his accounts, and he rationalizes his own hand in the industry of the trade of stolen goods, with an Air that gives us the theme of the play itself. He goes on to berate every realm of professional employment and reasons that they all manage to cheat each other. The following scenes introduce us to Filch, a thief whom Peachum employs, Mrs. Peachum and the dilemma that exists about their daughter. It is rumored that their daughter Polly has "taken a fancy"ng to convince of the falsehood of the rumors through one of the most famous and popular of gang leader and womanizer Captain Macheath and they soon learn through the prying of Filch and the confessions of Polly herself. Polly first enters with her father Peachum tryi Airs of the Opera, Air 6 or "What Shall I Do To Show How Much I Love Her." Polly sings "Virgins are like the fair flower in its luster. But, when once plucked,"tis no longer alluring." (Gay 12). Telling her father she knows how a lady is to handle herself towards Captain Macheath. As the truth is quickly revealed that Polly and Macheath are married, Peachum devises a plan in which Polly will have her husband hung and receive her dowry. The Act ends with Polly retreating to her room where she has Macheath hidden.

The final scenes of the opera collapse in on Macheath, as he drinks himself into a song. In a series of ten emotionally moving and melodramatic songs Macheath sings an empty reassurance to himself. He then sings to the tune of green sleeves "Since laws were made for every degree, to curb vice in others, as well as me, I wonder we han't better company upon Tyburn tree!" Upon concluding the tune enters two men from Macheath's gang who promises to fulfill his last request of seeing Peachum and Lockit to the gallows themselves. Lucy and Polly follow, weeping over the misfortune of their beloved husband, when suddenly four more wives enter, each carrying a baby.

And so The Beggar invites Macheaths reprise in which he confesses his love and marriage to Polly and proclaims a celebration in which everyone dances and the happy moral ending is restored.

Obviously John Gay completely reverses the norm of a typical opera while making The Beggar's Opera, but many critics would question the meaning of this ballad opera. Critics of The Beggar's Opera remain surprisingly puzzled on elementary interpretive problems. The key issues, according to critics, are the standards of judgment that are applied to the characters, events, and sentiments of this non-opera. Response to the work must depend heavily on the standards brought to it, since the play itself doesn't present us with explicit values and judgments. Seemingly Gay either assumed that the audience would know what standards to apply, or intended to leave at least some part of his audience puzzled and uneasy. Another question critics ask is if The Beggar's Opera is a satire, what does it attack? Most critics have taken an alternative to the multiplicity of the satiric targets. The satiric objects are: politics, Italian opera, literary forms (especially comedy of sentiment, tragedy, and the happy-ending convention in opera), and society's structure and conventions.

John Gay and his Beggar's Opera is something to remember. Gay allowed us to make light of the truths of morality. It's easy to see why this work was the most popular work of the eighteenth century.

The African Queen Research Paper

"The African Queen" Research Essay

This book is set before and during WWI in Africa. Rose and her priest brother are sent to Christianize the natives. At the time, central Africa was occupied by the Germans, of which Rose and Samuel highly detested. Samuel dies early on in the book and Rose is devastated. Through her brother's death Rose becomes highly patriotic and wants to help with her blow for the British Empire. Allnutt comes along and helps her bury him. To get her away from her brother's grave he invites her on his boat the African Queen.
__________________________________________________________

__________________________________________________________

The boat is very rickety and full of high explosives, mainly blasting gelatin. Allnutt tells her of the Keigin Luise (Louisa), a police steamer which the German government maintains. Rose suddenly gets the idea of torpedoing it. With all the explosives, she figures, they could create torpedoes. Allnutt says it's crazy and tells her of rapids and other dangers that they could come upon. She persuades him to go and he agrees reluctantly. He thinks that once she sees a real rapid she will change her mind. He shows her how to steer the boat. Allnutt remembers about Shona, a German camp that they would have to pass through, and he decides that they won't go on. To pay him back, while he is sleeping, Rose dumps out every bottle in every case of gin on the boat. She also stops talking to him, which in turn drives him crazy. He eventually gives in to Rose and decides to go down the river. They pass by Shona and are shot at.

The German captain tells everyone to stop shooting thinking that everyone in the launch is already dead. He thinks that no one in his or her right mind would voluntarily go through that area. He decides not to tell his superior, Von Hanneken. They traveled along and reached the rapids. Miraculously, they survive. Allnutt gets a splinter and Rose removes it. This seems to break the barrio between them. Then they kiss and make love. She asks him his real name and he says that his name is Charlie. They encounter cataracts that cause a lot of damage to the boat. The shaft is twisted and the propeller lost a blade. Rose brings up the idea of welding the shaft back into place using charcoal and making a new blade out of iron scraps. Allnutt laughs at this thinking that it's a crazy idea. He ends up doing it and it works. They arrive at a place where the Ulanga River changes its name and becomes the Bora. There the river was half mud and half water and the heat was colossal. Insects attacked every exposed part of skin. They didn't know what was worse the heat or the bugs. Night fell and the bugs left. Rose and Charlie contemplate their newfound love for each other before they fall asleep. They continue to look for the delta.

The delta empties into the lake on which the Louisa lies. Rose leads the boat towards the reeds where they get lost. They get stuck in the mud. It rains at night and they find themselves actually moving. They become stick again and this time they have to row using canoe paddles. The propeller gets stuck on weeds and Charlie goes in the water to cut it out. When he surfaces he is covered in leeches. Rose use salt to remove them. The mud got worse and worse as they went along and Allnutt was forced to get out and pull the boat along. Both Rose and Charlie caught malaria. Rose dosed herself and Charlie regularly with quinine from the portable medicine chest in her tin trunk. Had it not been for that they probably would have died. They found the lake. Realizing their current muddy condition, they washed themselves off and polished the boat. When Allnutt is asleep, Rose prays and then realizes that she sinned in sleeping with Allnutt. She looks at him and feels no remorse for her sins. She thinks of him as a husband already.

When they wake up they spot the Louisa and it was coming right towards them. It turns away and they realize that it's just patrolling the lake. Rose and Charlie make the torpedoes and attach them to the front of the boat. All they had to do was ram the Louisa, and then the torpedoes would detonate. A great storm came along, sinking the African Queen and the hopes of delivering a blow for England. Charlie is brought to the President of the Court who questions him. He doesn't answer any of the questions thinking that it's no use because Rose is dead. An officer comes in the room with Rose and a buoy revealing the name African Queen. The President realizes who they are and how they came to the lake. A Belgian ship spots the Louisa and thinks it odd that the show a white flag. The Belgian lieutenant boards the ship and sees Rose and Allnutt sick with malaria. They bring them back and take them to the hospital tent. The Louisa is attacked by the Matilda and the Amelia which shoot it down. They save all the Germans so they won't drown. Rose has to be sent back to England. To avoid being torn apart Rose has the consul marry her to Charlie.

Ancient Roman emperors are seen by the public in an admirable light. A prime example of this would be Marcus Julius Philippus, who was better known as Philip the Arab. What the public does not see is that even the most admirable, have their own dark secrets.

Philip was born in 204 AD during the reign of Septimius Severus, in the Roman province of Arabia. He was born to Julius Marinus a few years after his brother, Julius Priscus. (Meckler) In the 230's AD, Philip married Otacilia Dusanic, and they had a child whom they named Marcus Julius Severus Philippus. (Pohlsander, V. 31 214-222) Philip declared him co-ruler, Augustus, before the young Philip had even reached the age of ten. (Meckler)

Philip the Arab's career became prominent after he was appointed Praetorian Prefect to Gordian 111. (Marcellinu 345) Sources then indicate that an assassination of Gordian 111 occurred, leaving the rule to Philip. Philip was believed to have been the reason the assassination was carried out. (Marcellinu 345) He had used his influence to excite the soldiers and by prodding them, he had carried out his corrupt plan. (Smith 562)

As soon as Philip came into power, he began making changes. He made peace with the Persian King, Shapur, and travelled to Rome. (Meckler) He founded the city of Philippopolis and in April 248, he led the polis in the Secular Games, to celebrate the one thousandth birthday of Rome. (Pohlsander V.29 463-473)

Soon after all these activities had taken place, the Goths invaded Moesia. Decius was appointed to the Danubian Command. (Meckler) Decius was skilled in the military arts and soon became greatly loved by his army. The army soon acclaimed him emperor. Philip went forth to confront his rival and was slain in battle. (Smith 562) Decius was suspected to have murdered Philip or else wise, he had persuaded Philip's army to mutiny. Philip's young son was also murdered shortly afterwards. (Hornblower and Spawforth 786)

Philip the Arab lived during the time of 204-249 AD, and he was emperor between 244 and 249 AD. (Meckler) Philip was a gifted provincial administrator who found out the hard way that military skills are a necessity to survive in the ancient world.

Rhapsody in Blue Term Paper

Rhapsody in Blue Research Paper

Morris Gershovitz immigrated to New York from Russia in search of great opportunities. He had lost his Uncle's address, his only contact in the new world. He would have no where to sleep or eat until he found him. He later would win food money in a card game, sleep in an alley, and eventually find his Uncle. He would fall in love and marry a friend Rose Bruskin, who came to New York sometime before. He had many jobs and had to move the family through twenty-eight different homes. In the temporary home that could change at anytime, Morris and Rose would have four children: Ira born on December 6, 1896, George on September 26, 1898, Arthur on March 14, 1900, and Frances on December 6, 1906. As the family changed the last name would change as well, Morris would use the name Gershvin. Ira would keep that name, but George would change is to Gershwin (Jablonski and Stewart).

In school George was always being a trouble maker. His teacher Miss Smith would always have to talk to him about disciplinary problems. Music didn't really interest him, he liked to spend his time with the boys, causing trouble in the streets. He would find his love of music while walking through the streets of New York. He went inside a penny arcade to find a mechanical piano. He put some money in the machine and listened to the sounds of Ruben stein's "Melody in F". George was in awe. Although the music stopped, the music in his soul would never leave him (Jablonski and Stewart).
__________________________________________________________

__________________________________________________________

He would later meet a boy, named Maxie Rosenzweig, that would get him started on his path to stardom. They would become the best of friends. Maxie taught George everything that he knew about what went into making music. George would keep a musical scrapbook where he would keep programs and sketches of his favorite musical things (Kresh).

In 1910, the Gershwin's bought a piano for Ira. However, it was George that took lessons from a neighborhood lady. He would progress very quickly. She would not be able to teach him anymore, so she referred him to a new teacher, Charles Hambitzer. He was very fond of George's hidden talents. George would always want to move on to more modern things like jazz, but Charles would never allow it. He wanted George to have a classical base before he moved on. Hambitzer would turn George over to Edward Kilenyi for additional instruction. Both teachers would encourage George to engage in music experimentation. He would write his first ragtime songs in classical forms. The songs were entitled "Since I Found You" and "Ragging the Traumerei," they were rough in style, but they showed a merge between ragtime and classical (Kresh).

One day after school, he met a man named Moses Gumble that worked for a publishing house, Jerome H. Remick & Company. Moses liked the way he played the piano, and how he could sight read well. He offered George a job as a song plugger, a pianist that played new tunes in hopes of selling sheet music. It paid fifteen dollars a week which was much better than the four he was making at his father's restaurant. However, this job would cause him to drop out of school. His mom and him disagreed on this, but she would later give in. So at the age of fifteen, George would drop out of school and become a musician (Jablonski and Stewart).

Against his mother's wishes George was heading in to his new career at Tin Pin Ally in New York. His job was to play over a tune and induce the performers that they wanted it in their acts. He would become the best at his job. He could alter the song to a higher or lower pitch so it would be easier on the singer. In fact, being a song plugger wasn't that bad, he would get to see a lot of New York. He traveled to different hotels, restaurants, and theaters, where the singers performed. However, George had bigger inspirations than just being a song plugger. He wanted to create songs that would later become Broadway shows, or even operas and symphonies (Kresh).

After a while of working at the Remick, he grew weary of his piano plugging. So he would play the classics. His fellow employees were in awe because most of them couldn't ever read music, let alone perform the classics. George would finally start composing music, he would the first one there and the last one to leave. He had so many songs he had to keep a notebook called "GT" good tunes. He was greatly influenced by music and lyrics of other contemporary composers. Irving Berlin and Jerome Kern were the major influences on George's musical life. He liked Berlin's musical vitality, and Kern's melodic lines and harmonies. He would write many jazz tunes for Broadway musicals. However it wasn't until his brother Ira saw a newspaper ad announcing that George agreed to write a jazz concerto that would be performed by Paul Whiteman in his program "An Experiment in Modern Music at Aoelian Hall." The work was to be completed in a month, and George hadn't started on it yet. The next day, he was listening to the rhythms of train wheels, while traveling to Boston. This would help him write the composition. The night of the concert had finally come. George was nervous, because he felt he might not have anything to offer the audience. The concert was very long and the audience was becoming bored.

Years later George and his brother had teamed up to write musicals for such performers such as Fred and Adele Astaire, Gertrude Lawrence, W.C. Fields, Jeanette MacDonald, Ruby Keeler, Jimmy Durante, Fannie Brice, and Bob Hope.

After the opera, he turned his interest to films. He moved to California and wrote Shall We Dance for Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers, and a damsel in distress for Astaire, Joan Fontaine, and Gracie Allen. Early in 1937, he began to suffer headaches, dizzy spells, and blackouts. He was diagnosed with a brain tumor, and he fell in to a coma on July 9. The White House sent two destroyers to bring one of the country's most prominent specialists from his yacht. But by the time the doctor made it to the airport to go to Hollywood, local surgeons found it necessary to operate and discovered the situation hopeless. He would never wake from his coma and he would die on July 11, 1937, two-in-one-half months short of his 39th birthday, ending the life of one of America's great musical voices (Kresh).

Rhapsody in Blue was released in 1945 by Warner Brothers. It was directed by Irving Rapper, produced by Jesse L. Lasky, and written by Howard Koch, and Elliot Paul. Gershwin himself was the composer of the film. Robert Alda played George, while Herbert Rudley played his brother Ira. His mother and father were played by Morris Carnovsky, and Rosemary DeCamp. Alexis Smith played Christine Gilbert, one of George's love interest in the film. The other one was played by Joan Leslie, and was named Julie Adams.

The movie traces Gershwin's rise from a "song plugger" for a Manhattan music publishing company, to his peak of success. It shows his magical performance of "Rhapsody in Blue" at Aeolian Hall in 1924. It also shows many of his other masterpieces such as, "An American Paris", "Cuban Overture", "Concerto in F", and the 1935 folk opera Porgy and Bess. He does not allow himself to rest on his success, mercilessly pushing to top all his previous accomplishments. Finally his work proves to much, and he dies of a cerebral hemorrhage in the movie. Julie Bishop, who plays Ira's wife Lee, had one of the most memorable lines in the movie, "Ira, promise me that you will never become a genius." (Rapper and Lasky)

The movie had many differences mainly, the two women that played George's love interests. They were completely fictional, neither one of them ever existed. They both realize in the movie that they will always have to play second fiddle to George's music. Other differences were he didn't die from a cerebral hemorrhage , he died from a brain tumor (Rapper and Lasky).

The Divine Wind Research Paper

The Divine Wind Essay

The Divine Wind is a love story, there isn't any doubt about that but is it just a love story? I don't think so. I think there is more to the novel than just love. There are other important themes and messages in the text aside from love. The story is about the effect war has on society, racial prejudice, and betrayal just as much as it is fixated on love. Friendships also play just as much relevance in the story as love.

The novel teaches you that war is a bad thing. Not only can war destroy your towns and cities, it can also break the closest of bonds and friendships between people. The story depicts the harsh reality of war but not only from the view of the frontline, but it also shows how war can be just as scary back home worrying about loved ones.
__________________________________________________________

__________________________________________________________

The novel revolves a lot around the racial prejudice shown by white Australians before, during and after wartime. Not only towards the enemy (the Japanese people living in Australia), but racism towards Aboriginals. The novel makes you think about how much the attitude of white Australians has changed since these times. In the story this is how Olive Webb described aboriginals "Your black fellow cant make ethical or moral decisions," Olive went on. "He can't understand things like mercy or kindness. In his native state he is quite resourceful, but does he ever carry that through to something bigger or better? No. It's baffling." It would be strange to hear someone talk of aboriginals like that at the present time.

Many examples of betrayal are demonstrated within the book. Some of these examples were between the characters Hart and Mitsy, Carl Venning and Alice, and also I think betrayal played a big part in the relationship involving Hart and Jamie. One principal example of betrayal was when Hart, during probably the worst moment of his life, when he found out that his sister was missing and his father was having a stroke he felt betrayed by Mitsy and a confused, scared, enraged Hart felt Mitsy was partly responsible and this is how he felt about the situation: "Japanese fighter pilots had been shooting at Alice. I felt my face twist. I felt the spurt of burning tears, and I said to Mitsy "You Bitch"". This is a prime example of why the book is not just about love.

When I found out we were reading this book, from a glance, I thought the novel was going to be just another typical love story about how a boy who meets the girl of his dreams and they fall in love with each other and live happily ever after, that is what I would call a typical story just about love and have no real other meaning to it. The Divine Wind isn't just about love and if it was I wouldn't have enjoyed the novel as much as I did.

The Devil's Teardrop Research Paper

The Devil's Teardrop Research Paper

Rules and guidelines are established within societies in order for them to function. Without this system, everyone would behave in any way they wanted, creating an undesirable environment. With the use of context and character symbolization in The Devil's Teardrop, Jeffrey Deaver illustrates the effect of deviance and crime on a society. He explains the importance of norms and rules established in society and shows the consequences if they are not followed. Another social issue toucheds in this novel is the effect of mentally ill individuals in a functioning society. The criminal behaviour of the two characters, Edward Fielding and Evan Hughe are solely blamed on their mental illnesses. The author shows that mental illness is a danger to society since these individuals cannot conform to these rules. By doing this, Jeffrey Deaver correlates mental illness with deviance and crime. The author has a functionalistic point of view in that he believes that it is more important focussing on the survival of society rather than on the individuals themselves.
__________________________________________________________

__________________________________________________________

The key social issue outlined throughout the entire novel is the effect of deviance and crime on a society. Edward Fielding, one of the killers, wanted to prove to himself and to society that he did not have to conform to the rules and regulations that are established. "He spent hours wondering, should man put restraints on himself? Why shouldn't we go wherever our desires and minds take us?" (p. 382). With Fielding's desire to deviate from the norms, along with his mental illness, he and his partner commit mass murders starting at four pm and every four hours after that. Hughes, Fielding's partner in crime was aptly given the name "Digger" which not only meant gravedigger but also represented an organization in the past that was "mostly economic and social but allied with another group, which was political and more active - sometimes militant. They were called the "True Levelers." "These "Levelers" objected to the control of the people by an upper-class elite and by central government". The name was specifically chosen to oppose the ideas of rules and regulations, and the Digger was designed to bring chaos into society.

Deaver also shows the negative effects of deviance by the targets that the criminals have chosen. The killers target masses of people to demonstrate publicly that they do not have to conform to the laws and conventions of society. By the hysteria taking place during the repulsive mass murders, Deaver illustrates what happens when people do not follow rules. The killers also target areas where the rich frequently attend or areas relating to the government. The first target was the metro station at Dupont Circle where morst of the rich gathered. The next target was the Ritz Carleton, a very expensive hotel and the other, the "Black Wall", a Vietnam War memorial. The "Black Wall" was a target to show the criminals opinion about the government.

The fact that Fielding does not get away with "the most perfect crime," in the end shows that deviating from society from the author's point of view, can only end in demise (p.386).

The author also discusses the issues of mental illness and the effects of mentally ill people being apart of society. Both of the murderers, Fielding and Hughes have a mental illness. The fact that both individuals are creating this chaos in society indicates that mentally ill people are dangerous to society. Deaver gives Hughes an inhumane, monster-like quality with his "blank eyes" (p.72) and no emotions. He "recognizes a smile but doesn't know what it is exactly" (p. 123). The author is insinuating that since mentally ill individuals cannot tell the difference from right and wrong and are unable to follow the rules established in society, they will contribute nothing but conflict to it.

When illustrating the negative effects of deviance and crime in society, the author is successful. By showing the turmoil the citizens of Washington were in, Deaver effectively clarified that following the rules in society are important for it to function properly. Once people start deviating from the established system, it becomes impossible for members in society to live harmoniously.

The Leopard Research Paper

"The Leopard" Essay

The Leopard is a novel which explores the unknown realms of death, with these three passages being prime examples of this. However, Lampedusa deals with this theme of death in an intricate manner such that, whilst these passages can be broadly paralleled with each other, the deaths that occur are not mere deaths of the human body, instead, Lampedusa chooses, through powerful language and vivid imagery, to outline how one man, Don Fabrizio can have such a profound effect on the lives of others and how decisions made in the present severely affect the events of the future.

"Just whatever you like, ladies; keep them or throw them on the rubbish heap; they have no value whatsoever." This statement from the Pope's secretary, Don Pacchiotti who was Piedmontese, "those who besieged the last Bourbon King", was the final irony of the novel. No longer would the Salina name be dragged through mud, the last hint of prestige associated with this once prestigious household was now officially gone. "Carolina had been the real creator of this collection", however, Concetta, as uncontested mistress of the house, had to bear the burden of humiliation for all three of the unmarried sisters.
__________________________________________________________

__________________________________________________________

The last ounce of life was drained from Concetta's body; this lack of emotion was the result of years of solitude stemming from Concetta's lost love Tancredi. Even the portrait of her father, who she deeply loathed, was now just a mere physical object, the four green cases in her room, "an inferno of mummified memories".

Lampedusa chose to end the novel with this chapter, "Relics", in which the events occur twenty-seven years after the Prince's death, to outline how Concetta was in fact the last of the Salina, something completely overlooked by Fabrizio, although, he was aware that Concetta's attitude closely resembled his own during his lifetime. This chapter, and this passage from the novel also outlines how The Leopard still has a profound effect on his family members, even posthumously. Lampedusa also makes us aware of an almost religious presence, the Salina family helpless in the path of their own fate, doomed from time immemorial.

Don Fabrizio faces the death of pure nobility with the union of Angelica and Tancredi. "Angelica excited by the obvious admiration she was arousing in every man around the table." Fabrizio also perceptively realizes the weakness of the Sicilian people, and during his conversation with Chevalley he describes the attitudes of his people: "a hankering for oblivion that attracts us only because is it dead." The Prince clearly longs for death, for "a meeting less ephemeral for perennial certitude".

The union of Tancredi and Angelica is the event which desensitized Concetta. It was also Concetta's stubborn Salina pride which prevented her from ever marrying; this also evoked a hatred for her father and a bitter-sweet relationship with Tancredi's wife, Angelica.

The inspection of the Salina chapel is Concetta's final emotional trigger. She was alive in the physical sense of being, yet she felt nothing, living only in a subliminal state, consumed by the wretched fate of the Salina; defunct in spirit. This segment also highlights the differences between Concetta and her two sisters. Carolina and Caterina spending time collecting worthless relics, Concetta providing the finances and dealing with anything of importance. The obvious similarity between the sisters is their marital status, and whilst Fabrizio himself is to blame for this, the specific details are very different.

Worthy of noting from passage three is the comments of the "lovely frames" which encase the worthless relics. These can be paralleled with the lives of Don Fabrizio and Concetta, decorated with much glamour, but most of the actual artefacts themselves having no worth. The artefacts are life, and remind us of how Don Fabrizio lead a life of decadence, melancholy and one of little meaning, seeking refuge in astronomy. "I'm seventy-three, and all in all, I may have lived, really lived, a total of two".

Lamepdusa's mastery of language provides the reader with a fulfilling experience, one filled with many complex themes and ideas, many more than solely the theme of death. These passages are about much more than death, they are as much about life as they are death, making the reader aware, mainly from The Prince's monologue, just how his actions shaped the lives of so many others, and how the Salina family were not in control of their fate. Lampedusa makes us aware of just how much Concetta's life was marred by her authoritarian father, and how memories of the past can be more damaging than an actual moment in the present. Upon conclusion of the novel, Concetta had Bendico, the Prince's stuffed Great Dane, discarded out the window, but even then, the deceased dog seems to compose itself into the form of a prancing leopard, and then "all came to rest in a little heap of livid dust."

Real Superheroes Essay

Real Superheroes Essay

Over the last few hours I have been thinking about superheroes. There are different types of superheroes. Some heroes come from other planets and have super powers. Some superheroes have technology and use their wits to fight villains and save the planet. They wear capes and spandex and appear larger-than life in comic books, cartoons and movies. I enjoy superheroes, but what I am really thinking about are the real superheroes, the true heroes that I know.

By definition a superhero is a hero, especially in children's comic books and television cartoons possessing extraordinary and often magical powers.
_________________________________________________________

__________________________________________________________

Everyday ordinary people can be super heroes. My parents are superheroes in my eyes. My parents don't fight super villains or crime. They don't have magical powers or x-ray vision. My parents are heroes of a different sort. Everyday they fight to provide for me and my siblings; to put food on the table and make sure we have clothes on are backs. Super heroes may have bionic body parts or ride in special vehicles, like the Batmobile. My parents drive a Pontiac Grand AM and a F-150 truck; they have jobs to go to everyday. They even make time to cook and clean up. I'd call that extraordinary or even magical power. Rather than performing superpowers my parents live their lives and don't let anything keep them down. They face trials like bills, work, money and kids; superheroes face their own trials in each issue of their comic. For my parents it is an everyday thing; they deal with all of the challenges that come along with life.

The definition of a hero: a person of distinguished courage or ability admired for his or her brave deeds and noble qualities; regarded as a role model or ideal person. This is how I see my parents. They are like X-men or Spider man. My parents are just two people who try to enjoy life like everyone else. Sometimes that takes a lot of courage. I think their experience is similar to that of a superhero; they see their powers as both a curse and a blessing. Speaking for myself I'd gladly exchange the pat on the back from admirers for their life. They may not see their selves as heroes, but others are inspired by the way they live their lives despite a big family.

Comic book heroes seem fearless and have superhuman strength and powers. A real hero is an ordinary person facing extraordinary circumstances and handling them the best they can. I think our true powers lie in the way that we live our lives with dignity courage and love.

You see my parents are my number one heroes; they don't compare to these super natural heroes or even these other heroes such as Firemen, police and doctors. They have something that know one else can give me. My parents have no qualifications or training but the pass in my book.

The current form of superhero is his own boss, He or she is financially comfortable and pursues a fairly high-powered career, and they take care of their family and handle their business. That describes my parents to a tee; a superhero that is.

Kevin Baker Essay

Kevin Baker Essay

A flirtatious, talkative, romantic, and friendly person is Kevin Baker. He is also a little too confident about himself. At times we see him trying to get a girls number or as we say "her digits," or he is chillin' with his friends. Although he has some business he needs to handle with homework and school activities, he still manages to go out and do his own thing like basketball, football, and girls..

Kevin Javaris is one whom I personally call, "Jay." Jay was born in Jackson, Mississippi; he calls it Jacksonville (Hometown nickname). His birthday is on March 28, 1989; he is now fourteen years old. Jay is attending Wuerzbug American High School (WAHS). He went from seventh grade to ninth grade, in Schweinfurt American Middle School.

When I asked him about his past and he said, "I was a bad little boy. One day, in preschool, I pulled my teacher's hair because she grabbed me." Now, let us talk about his good side. His hobbies are sports and dancing, and his favorite color is blue. Jay likes to listen to rap and R&B. He has one brother and two sisters. He considers Derick Bolden his best friend because he was always there for him. Kelvin believes in the death penalty. He always says, "What goes around, comes around," when you are in some type of trouble, fight, or argument.

Kevin Javaris is more of a flirtatious, talkative, romantic, and friendly person, but he shows himself as a sensitive man. I think everyone should be able to get to know him better, if you don't know him. If you give him respect, he will give you respect back. Therefore, in other words, you decide how you want to be treated around him. Just be yourself!

Research Paper on Enterprise

Research Essay on Enterprise

The first day of the enterprise the teacher arranged our groups. In my team there was Bashira, Ali and Sabina. We sat around and discussed what kind of business enterprise we were going to adapt. Sabina come up with idea that we should have a bookstore enterprise. I said that it would be hard because it will involve other people and we may not gain anything, we could actually result in losses. The next day Bashira said that we should have a cake stall. Everyone agreed. I then come up the idea of having an ice-cream stall.

Everyone thought that it wasn't a bad idea. I convinced the group that it would be an easy enterprise because we can all bring our own ice cream and the wether is perfect. People will buy it; we will definitely gain a lot of money. Finally they all agreed. We had an ice-cream stall. We decided that we were going to sell two days but in different weeks. We set our ice cream on Fridays. The first ice cream stall was held on the 20/9/02 and the second one was held on 27/9/02. We placed the stall in front of the canteen. The first stall was only days away so we had to prepare for that. We gave each other our roles. Bashira was the manager of the business, she come up with a lot of plans like where we should have the ice cream and when. I was the buyer; I talked about with my group what kinds of ice creams we should sell and what kinds of cones we should use and also what other equipments we need for the business so that I can buy it. Sabina was the advertiser. She came up with different kinds of posters we should use in advertising the business. We just told her just use A4 size paper to draw with and then we will make photocopies to stick it around the school. Ali was the seller. He discussed with us what kind of techniques he should use to attract the customers. We came up with being loud and telling the customers that we had nice ice creams for sale. He had other ideas too as he suited the job, because he is good at attracting people with his acting and talking.

Even though my job was to buy the ice creams I also helped Sabina stick the posters around the school. I liked it was really fun. We also spread the word of (the ice cream) by telling our friends, our classmates, and the people on our busses.

Bashira as the manager kept an eye on us as we progressed. As she is good at planning and organizing activities, She told us how the business was going to be carried out. She decided on who should do certain roles and what they should do. Bashira used some solving problems techniques; whenever there was something wrong with the business she would fix it straight away. Like when we run out of ice cream on the first day, she insisted we get one of the teachers to buy it for us from the shops.

Ali was good at using mathematical ideas and techniques; that's why we gave him the job of selling the ice cream and in charge of the money.

I was good at working with others in teams and communicating ideas. I worked really well in the team and participated in every aspect of the business. I participated in the buying, advertising and selling. I gave the team some really good ideas when planning the enterprise. I am good at giving ideas and advices so the team was ready to listen and implement my ideas. Like when we were planning our business I came up with the idea of ice cream stall, and they all agreed.

Sabina had some good using technology and arts; that's why she was given the job of advertising and drawing the posters and pictures. She used the computer in designing the posters.

Research Paper on Softball

Research Paper on Softball

Unfortunately, I have no deep, dark secret, like having a third eye. Well, at least not to my knowledge! But I do have a passion, well, more of an obsession. I love to play softball. Yes, one could tell that by looking at some of my t-shirts. But one could not tell how involved I actually am. No one could tell, by looking in my eyes, that I have traveled to Chicago and North Carolina to play in the Softball World Series. Nor could one tell, by looking at my hands, that the majority of my summer consists of softball or that I play all year long. Practicing on the weekdays, and traveling to different tournaments on almost every week end, in the Summer. I love not having a weekend, during the Summer to just go to the beach or hang out with friends. I love how my Summer is consumed by softball.

I play softball all year round, summer, fall, winter, and spring. The biggest time for softball is during the summer, not the spring. Spring, along with winter and fall, is a warm-up for Summer. I belong to a traveling Summer softball team. My team, and most other Summer traveling teams, consist of players from all different schools. My team has players from Beaumont, Harvey, Richmond Heights, North, South, Brush, Perry, Chagrin Falls, and obviously West Geauga. The Summer is for the best of the best. There are teams all over the country. We have played teams from Nevada, Florida, Virginia, Illinois, and even Alaska in different tournaments. Every weekend, during the Summer, we play in a different tournament. Some tournaments are close to home and some require us to stay in a hotel for a few nights. A Summer traveling team is a highly competitive team.

Each tournaments is run basically the same way. They are held on the weekends, usually Friday through Sunday. We usually play three to five games a day. Fridays and Saturdays are called pool play. This means the games played on those days are to place teams in the actual tournament, which starts on Sundays. For example, if one team won all 5 games and they had the best record then they were seeded, or ranked, number one. That number one seeded team would then play the team with the worst record, or the team seeded last. Then the team with the second highest record would play the team with the second worst record, and so on. Sunday is the day where winners are crowned and losers get nothing! The format on Sunday is simple, lose and go home. Most tournaments a team plays a two game elimination on Sundays. Meaning, if a team loses the first game, they keep playing. But if they happen to lose another they are sent home. Friday and Saturday games don't really matter in the overall tournament. A team could lose all their games on Friday and Saturday, be ranked last, and still win the whole tournament on Sunday. That is the basic format for a tournament.

Teams from all over the country compete in these tournaments, from Alaska to Hawaii. Any where from ten to eighty teams can compete in a tournament in just one age bracket. There are usually six different age brackets in each tournament: 8, 10, 12, 14, 16, and 18 year olds. The number of age brackets depends on the size of the tournament. Any team can compete, but the entrance fee alone is usually over 300 dollars. For the bigger tournaments they can cost up to 1,000 dollars. Also factor in other expenses like jerseys, equipment, hotel rooms, if needed, for twelve girls, and not to mention feeding them! Summer softball can be pricey, so fund raising is a enormous part of the game.

Traveling softball has taken me many places over the years. We have gone near, like Eastlake, and far, like North Carolina, which we played for a week long tournament. We have also gone to Chicago, another week long, New York, Columbus, Toledo, Akron, Brookpark, and many other places. My personal favorite was Chicago because we played in a town less than ten minutes away from Downtown Chicago. Just imagine twelve sixteen year old girls walking around Chicago with just one male Coach!

School softball, played in the spring, is nothing compared to summer softball. It is far less competitive than summer leagues. Most teams in summer have pitchers pitching at least sixty-five miles per hour. Where as in Spring , the highest is usually forty-five to fifty miles per hour. For some girls, Spring softball is just some thing they do to pass the time, but in Summer it is only the dedicated that stick around. Teams are just on a higher level in Summer than in Spring, because most teams hand pick the best from each school to make a Summer traveling team. In just one day, we could play up to five games, during the summer! In spring, we are lucky if we can play five games in two weeks. I mentioned this before, Spring is just a warm up for Summer.

The experiences I have had playing Summer softball were ones I would never give up. I feel so fortunate to have these experiences that, in many ways, have changed my life. My dream is to receive a scholarship and play a sport in college. Summer softball has certainly moved me closer to achieving that dream. One college has already asked me to tour their campus, which was the most exciting moment in my life. I just wish I have many more moments like that. Most people could never fathom my involvement in and love I have for the game of fast pitch softball by just looking in my eyes.
